Valve Adds In-game DLC Support to Steam
by Nick Breckon, Mar 16, 2009 6:19pm PDTValve today announced that the first in-game DLC has hit Steam in the form of content for Twisted Pixel Games' title The Maw.
The support for in-game DLC means that developers and publishers can now sell their content from within games, rather than only on the Steam storefront.
"DLC can now be added to any game on Steam, regardless of whether it was originally purchased via Steam, at retail, or via other digital outlets," writes Valve. "It is also a feature of Steamworks, the suite of free tools and services available to game developers and publishers."
The Maw: Brute Force and The Maw: River Redirect, two expansion levels, are now available for purchase on Steam for $1.25 apiece.

for those of you bitching and moaning, get the fuck over it. Steam is simply making it easier for those few devs who want to do the DLC bullshit.
It's funny how some of you act like PC gamers don't have ways of circumventing it.

It's been one of the first games on steam to have 'DLC' in the form of the 'Elite Units' from the special edition. But soon, I am confident they will be made available to other people to buy. After that, I wouldn't be surprised if we see lots of new downloadable units, new historical battles (only two came with the game) unlocked playable factions (Mughals? they're the only 'Major faction' that isn't currently playable), new 'Road to Independence' or M2: TW Kingdoms style localised-campaigns and hopefully more emerging factions... (I want armenia to appear when the province of Armenia revolts from the ottomans!)
Anyway, you heard it here first :p

Oh and, Twisted Pixel? If you want people to be happy about paying for new levels don't call them "deleted scenes."

You wanna pay 2 bucks for fucking horse armor, you go pay 2 bucks for horse armor. Personally if I wanna deal with microtransactions, and paying more money then the game itself, I'll play an MMO or one of those shitty free MMO's where any sort of good gear costs real money.
I have every faith that Valve will not use this to push bullshit DLC for THEIR games, but if they wanna let other devs release DLC on Steam, that's called business.
When they release the $5 weapons pack for L4D that contains 3 new weapons, then we can start getting upset about this, until then, its just another way for dumb developers to try and push their DLC on the PC, which will fail.
