Morning Discussion
Though the writing's been on the wall for a long time, I have to say that I'm pretty bummed about EGM shutting down. While my subscription lapsed around 2005, I was a pretty avid reader for over 10 years. In fact, EGM was the reason I got into this field.
Back in fourth grade, I was one of those kids that would tuck an issue of EGM into my history book and read it during class. I can't even begin to fathom the amount of quality games EGM's staff turned me on to, or the vast knowledge they instilled in my head.
My heart goes out to all those affected, both at EGM and 1UP. Best of luck, and thanks.

I did a free subscription back in like 2002 or so. Nice magazine but not something I kept around (by way of comparison I have PC Gamer magazines from 1996 or earlier).
At some point I realized it had been more than a year and they were still sending me the magazine. I think they sent me a renewal form, which I ignored, but the magazine kept coming anyway.
I moved across the state and never notified EGM and the magazine followed me.
At some point it did finally stop coming but it came for free for years. My guess would be that they valued selling my eyeballs more than they valued my subscription fees.
Same thing happened to Penny Arcade
