Microsoft: Xbox 360 Disc Scratching Affects 'Less Than 1 Percent' of Owners
by Chris Faylor, Dec 17, 2008 10:19am PSTFollowing word that Microsoft knew the Xbox 360 could damage discs, the company now claims the problem only afflicts an extremely small minority of Xbox 360 owners.
"While we have had some users contact us with concerns about scratched discs, it is much less than 1 percent of the total Xbox 360 user base," Microsoft told Edge. "Xbox 360 is designed so that it will not damage a game disc as long as the console is not moved while the disc is spinning."
"Too much movement of any game console, not just Xbox 360, can cause scratches on a disc," the company added. "That's why we put a warning on the face of the disc tray."
According to a recently unsealed legal document, Microsoft was aware of the issue before the console launched, with an employee claiming that over 55,000 customers had complained of scratched discs by April 2008.
The motion claims that Microsoft explored several options to resolve the problem, eventually settling on a warning label and a disc replacement program.
As of November 2008, 25 million Xbox 360s have been sold worldwide.

And this is just like when they said the RROD's only affected a small percentage of people. What bullshit that was

After 2 weeks of all my games not working I took the entire Xbox and all the games I'd gotten back to the store (HMV) and told them the problem - they replaced the xbox (letting me swap the harddrive so I didn't lose my downloaded content) and replaced all the games as well - never have had a single problem in the 6 months I've had the new xbox
I was really pissed though - if I wasn't a hardcore gamer I can very well imagine just returning it and getting a different console if something like that happened
Note that with as often as it sounded like Blockbuster gets scratched games back, either a lot of people are doing this, or Microsoft is full of it and a lot more than 1% of people are affected.

am i missing something here?
I find this hard to believe. I have not yet had any issues myself, but I know 3 of my friends have this issue out of maybe 6 friends who have 360's.
How about you guys? What percent of people you know have has this problem?

Sure, some could argue that this is a VERY good reason why they're a $175 billion company, but it's consumer disrespect. Microsoft eventually caved in to the criticism from the RROD; now they need to cave in to this.
Liars, there is a warm place in hell for them.

Luckily, I sent it away to Microsoft and they replaced the console, since then no problems with disc scratching. I blame my bad experience on a faulty drive. But I'm not complaining, I really enjoy playing on it and the problem is fixed now.
