Microsoft Talks Xbox 360 Blu-ray Rumors
by Chris Faylor, Oct 10, 2008 7:56am PDTRumors of a Blu-ray add-on for the Xbox 360 are once again swirling, and Microsoft has once again denied that it has any plans to release such a device.
"As we've said before, Microsoft has no plans to introduce an Xbox 360 Blu-ray add-on," Microsoft told Edge. "Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles, and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available."
At the least, this is the fifth time Microsoft has denied the persistent rumors that the Xbox 360 will receive an upgrade to enable Blu-ray movie playback. Instead, the company is focused on the online distribution of movies and television shows via Xbox Live, which will gain support for Netflix's streaming video on November 19.

1) Buy a Stand Alone BD player, but make sure it's one of the upgradable ones or at least BD profile 2.
2) Build your own HTPC with a BD/HD-DVD combo drive (or buy one pre-built). This is the most costly but gives you every media format under the sun, can attach to your HD set and receiver with HDMI and SPDIF, is Internet connected, fully upgradable and can play games as well (not to mention is very sweet for streaming Netflix and other services). This was my choice, cost around $700 and I'm happy as hell I can still play all my old HD-DVDs on it as well as Blu, DVD and well, everything.
3) Buy a PS3 which will make a nice HD player but you're stuck with whatever Sony decides you should be able to use the machine for and their anemic lineup of games (if gaming even interests you).

Blu-Ray is gonna fill a very small and un-noticeable niche.

build the damn drive within the system plz. thx.
A year ago I'd agree 100%, but now that I'm hoping to get a Blu-ray player by the end of the year I'm most likely going to end up buying a PS3 solely for the Blu-ray player. I'm sure I'll end up buying games for the system once I have it, but if it weren't for Blu-ray I'd never own one in the first place.
The only thing that would keep me from buying one is if Netflix signifigantly increased the number of titles available via streaming, and if streaming were available in HD.
