WoW: Wrath of the Lich King Only Shipping on DVD, Signals Death Knell of PC CD Games

Blizzard has revealed that when Wrath of the Lich King launches on November 13, World of Warcraft (PC) subscribers will only be able to obtain the MMO's second expansion pack in DVD format.

"World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King will only be available on DVD, not on CDs," Blizzard representative Vaneras wrote on the WoW-Euruope Forums, as noticed by WoW Insider.

The first World of Warcraft expansion pack, The Burning Crusade, shipped in both CD and DVD formats, with a digital download becoming available a few weeks after launch.

While the gaming industry has been moving towards the DVD format for many years now, some speculate that due to World of Warcraft's widespread acceptance and low system requirements, not all of its 10.9 million subscribers will have the DVD drive required to install the latest expansion.

When DVD drives cost less then the games there is no excuse. But I am sure some will somehow complain on the Blizzard forums.
If they are that poor they shouldn't be buying games anyway.

Well shit what the hell are people still doing with CD drives? You can get a DVD drive at Fry's (a SATA one too) for less than 30 dollars.

Heck you can get a friggin' Blu-Ray external drive for 70, and a rewritable one for about 200 (that's huge but compared to what they use to be, that's a good sign) - and those are AMAZING for storage.

Anyway, I remember getting Company of Heroes once, and it was 6 friggin' CD's. I thought I got the DVD version but whatever. I remember older but bigger games like CoD2 were 5 CD's long.

-and to think that the most a game could have been back the day is like, 30 MB.

What finally? Should have shipped the original that way anyways. Now if they include the prior 2 releases on the dvd also it'll pique my interest in resubbing as I really don't want to go through and reinstall from cd's.

Maybe it's still different in the UK but CD died a long time ago. I can't think of a game that came out on CD in the last five years. (Maybe there was some budget or re-release titles.)

According to the steam hardware survey 96% of users have a DVD drive, so its not like they aren't as widely adopted as this makes out.
