Valve 'Doesn't Have Bandwidth' for PS3 Left 4 Dead

by Blake Ellison, Sep 23, 2008 2:35pm PDT

Like the undead in Valve's upcoming shooter Left 4 Dead, the rumors of a PlayStation 3 version just won't die. But like the undead, the chances of that PS3 port just took a barrel full of buckshot to the face.

"We don't have the bandwidth [to do Left 4 Dead on PS3]" Valve co-founder Gabe Newell told 1UP. He added, "We're doing the 360 and PC version ourselves."

Still, Newell would not put the persistent rumors to rest. "For The Orange Box, EA did the PS3 version. They're interested in getting a PS3 version done. We just have to figure out where the resources can come from. We don't have the bandwidth. "

With just two months to go until the zombie-escape shooter's November 18 release on PC and Xbox 360 and no PlayStation 3 version in sight, if a PS3 edition does end up coming around, it will inevitably arrive late to the party, just like The Orange Box PS3.

  • I don't feel that Valve feels anything but apathy for the PS3. Their engine is optimized for the way the PC and 360 do things and it takes a lot of work to change the workload of the threads and balance everything out on the PS3. To support that level of effort either EA needs to see a healthy ROI or Sony has to dig into it's famously deep pockets and provide internal support. Evidently neither of these things have happened, yet. I'msure both parties are interested in seeing how the 360 version goes over sales wise before committing any top notch resources to it. The main problem with shooters on the PS3 is they just aren't as big of sellers outside of the US, where the 360 handily dominates the sector.
