Fallout 3 Censorship Goes Global
by Blake Ellison, Sep 09, 2008 3:18pm PDTBethesda has revealed that following trouble with the ratings board in Australia, all versions of Fallout 3 will be identically censored when the game is released in October.
"We want to make sure folks understand that the Australian version of Fallout 3 is identical to both the UK and North American versions in every way, on every platform," Bethesda VP Pete Hines told Edge.
Fallout 3, a sequel expanding on Black Isle's classic PC RPG series, was initially refused classification in Australia, effectively banning the game from sale. The game was modified so that "the reward and incentive" for in-game drug use was reduced significantly and then given an MA-15+ rating.
Names for real-world drugs have also been removed from the game. Hines asserted, "An issue was raised concerning references to real world, proscribed drugs in the game, and we subsequently removed those references and replaced them with fictional names."

Honor killings and rapes by religious fanatics necessitates a "hug-out" among Aussie politicians.
Guns banned across the country, home invasions soar.
But no drugs in Fallout 3, so it's all going to be OK.

In fact the guide I see lists the consumables as:
Psycho, Buffout, Mentats, Jet, Antidote, RadAway, Rad-X, Fruit, Healing Powder, Stimpak, Super Stimpak, Jet Antidote, Hypo, Mutated Toe, Monument Chunk, Cookie, Guns and Bullets, Scout Handbook, Big Book of Science, First Aid Book, Deans Electronics, Cat's Paw Issue #5, Pip Boy Medical Enhancer, Pip Boy Lingual Enhancer, Beer, Booze, Gamma Gulp Beer, Rot Gut, Roentgen Rum
Surely a sequel would use similar names, wouldn't it? :-\

This is the most intresting part as Fallout 1, 2 and even Tactics did not have real world drugs in it. Also the affects these drugs had on the charactor was usully bad in the long run.
Bethesda should keep to the Fallout universe, the drugs in that where Jet, mentats, Rad-away, Rad-x, physco etc..
Nuclear war, guns, violence, and a targeting system for different body parts: OK
Drugs: BAD

I do hope however next year (or end of this year i cant remember the exact date) when our ratings board comes together, that they will indeed create an R18+ ratings for video games. The problem with our system is each state needs to agree to change the ratings, if one state disagrees then it will not happen. And for many years now, one guy from South Australia (family first wanker) has been against it. But there is alot of pressure coming from all levels of government to change the ruling and infact the tv show "good game" (which is on ABC and funded by the government) also regularly pushes for an R18+ rating.
I should also point out, here in Sydney we have drug clinics where addicts can come to a safe place to inject and dispose of needles and get help if they ask for it 100% legally. It's been running as a test program for over a decade and has been incredibly succesfull helping to remove the amount of needles from beaches, parks and also reducing the amount of deaths from overdoses. It has also helped alot of people kick the habit. But our governent is too scared to increase the amount of rooms we have and its stuck on a permanent "trial period".
There's such a small minority of family first conservatives here that control so much of our policy making its frustrating.

I'm sure drug use (or the lack thereof) isn't going to make or break this game, but it sucks just the same that the devs buckled to the whiners. It's all about the Benjamins, yo.
at least it will show me which weapons work best for decapitation and dismemberment and the best places to shoot people so i guess i will just go out and do that instead.
Freedom of speech. Gotta protect it. Vote for it.

So everyone gets the no blood / no gore german, no boobs US, no drugs australian version? (j/k I have no clue about the differences but these are the usual suspects)
That statement is a bit vague, I thought there were supposed to be 6 different versions, maybe they chose to do only like 3 or 4 now because they can save some money that way.

Real scary Australia. A green icon of a syringe is going to turn me into some sort of junky addict in real life.
On top of that, you dont even see the character use the drug. No visuals, no audio. If he took a rubber tourniquet, tried it on his arm, popped the cap of the needle, flicked it to get any air bubbles out, and then injected it into his arm, that might be a wee bit to much. But just a green icon? Damn, that's weak.

This is bullshit. Why should I have to experience a watered down experience just because of some Australian nancies. We have whole fucking TV shows about drugs. Weeds, Breaking Bad, and half the cop shows feature drug use, manufacture, etc...

This is a really, I dunno, not super important to get all bent out of shape about.
It's not like the other Fallout games used a bunch of real world drug names. They were all made up.
Mentats, Radaway, Stimpacks, Jet etc.
