StarCraft 2 Might Gain Fourth Race in Expansion Pack

By Chris Faylor, Aug 29, 2008 9:09am PDT While the initial release of StarCraft II will pack the same three races as the original, Blizzard has suggested that a fourth may appear "in the event" of an expansion pack.

"We don't have the resources or time to add a fourth race to the launch of StarCraft II, but I'm sure in the event that we decide to do an expansion set it's a feature that'll come up for discussion," studio co-founder Frank Pearce told videogaming247.

He explained that the team had originally considered adding a fourth race to the long-awaited real-time strategy sequel, but opted to focus on the "the cool, best ideas on the existing three races rather than diluting those ideas across four races."

Though the company has yet to detail when StarCraft 2 will arrive on PC, Blizzard has a history of releasing at least one expansion pack for its recent PC efforts, including the original StarCraft, Diablo I and II, Warcraft III, and World of Warcraft.

  • Really? You don't say?

We already know from the CGI cutscenes that the Xel'Naga are on the comeback (and personally I hope they kick the ever loving shit out of Kerrigan before Raynor deposits a bullet between her eyes). Thus, we know fans will be clamouring to play them as the 4th race. Blizzard said that SC2 will only have 3 playable races but we know that there will be at least 1 expansion pack. Put two and two together and he's just stating the obvious which is why he has the okay from Blizzard's PR/marketing to say such things openly.
