New PS3 Firmware Arrives, Replaces Pulled Update

After releasing and subsequently pulling last week's v2.40 PlayStation 3 firmware, Sony Computer Entertainment has issued a revised version of the update.

Currently available for download using the system's update option, the new release, v2.41, is said to resolve an issue that rendered some consoles inoperable after installing the last update.

Apart from the fixes, the update sports no new functionality over the v2.40 update, which upped the online friends list limit to 100 and featured the long-awaited addition of an in-game XMB--allowing cross-game text messaging and custom soundtrack capabilities--along with the Xbox 360 achievement-esque Trophies.

  • The one feature that's really missing is being able to invite a friend to an online game.... 360 has had that forever now and sony still doesn't have it. The trophies are gimmicky, I don't really care about that. Plus anytime you look at a friend the trophies are given a huge priority presentation wise. I actually do not own a 360 and much prefer the ps3 (games, hardware, developing for it, etc), but in terms of software support sony is still late, very late. While the prospect of Playstation Home seems neat, I wish they could focus on less ambitious and more short term stuff such as (like I said earlier) being able to invite a friend to your online game.
