Blizzard Confirms Unannounced Fourth Game, Next-Gen MMO Not Diablo 3

Despite ongoing efforts with StarCraft II, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King and Diablo III, PC developer Blizzard has confirmed that it has another MMO in the works.

"There is still one unknown project," Blizzard executive VP Rob Pardo revealed to OnlineWelten during the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational. "We have another development team."

Pardo affirmed that Blizzard's recent job listings for an "unannounced next-gen MMO" were not related to Diablo III. The company had previously stated that the project was not a World of Warcraft expansion either.

Fans have long speculated that Blizzard may follow the ultra-successful World of Warcraft with a World of StarCraft MMO. The three-faction scenario and multi-world setting would seem to lend itself well to the MMO format.

Others believe that the project could be a new franchise, as Blizzard has not created a new property since StarCraft's release in 1998.

"The idea of a new franchise is very intriguing to employees of the company," said Blizzard chief operating officer Paul Sams to Gamasutra in a recent interview. "Are we ever going to release a new one? I would absolutely say we will at some point. I just don't know when that day will be quite yet."

And as for a release date on any of the three known titles? "We ship the games when they're ready," Pardo commented. "You guys know this."

We know it's not Warcraft. We know it's not Diablo. I think it's about time for a new series for Blizzard. Each of their current series have generated a cult following, plus a healthy set of casual consumers, but what of those who are entirely uninterested in Starcraft, or thus its version of an MMO? Would it not be a good business model to attract the portion of the gaming audience which is not yet attracted?

Then again I'm speaking with a non Korean-market point-of-view. And hey, I don't really know, maybe each of the series' followings are already diverse enough to say they've attracted all the audience they need.

Just a thought. I think it'd be cool for something new.

I actually kinda wish Blizzard would never talk to us at all. Building hype the way they have been doing is just making me frustrated and angry, because now what do we have? 3 more years until they are finally "ready" to release Diablo 3? So we just get to sit around and wait for the damn games to come out "when they are ready."

I would like to ask Blizzard to just fire their PR department and announce a game by sending it to stores and selling it? I'm tired of all this advertising and hype building. I would rather the company was run by Mr. Wonka, good products without the "Ooh, what do I have hidden behind the curtain now kiddies?"

This is what's so bizarre to me... For starters, I'm not entirely surprised it wouldn't be a Diablo MMO because I don't see how they could "PG" the game world enough for the masses. If you think about it, Diablo and the world of Sanctuary is pretty damn dark which is one of the compelling things about the game. Angels and demons on earth with gruesome and disturbing scenes along with very twisted characters. I don't know how they could kiddie that down enough for the masses. No room for purple elves and pink striped tigers in Sanctuary...

Then again, does anyone else but me have their doubts about a Starcraft MMO? It almost seems too risky a venture. What other sci-fi MMO's have actually been successful? AO? Eve-Online? CoH? There really haven't been any big commercial successes that I can think of and it doesn't seem like the masses gravitate toward the sci-fi based worlds. I think people find fantasy an easier form of escapism and they tend to relate to it better but that's just my 2 cents. So... if it's not Diablo and it's not Warcraft, that leaves Starcraft or some unannounced world. I'd bet it's a new fantasy universe but who knows... I just don't see an MMO Starcraft being as big a commercial success as WoW but then again, I wouldn't put anything past Blizzard... Thank God for gaming companies like them that set the standard for everyone else.

World of Diablo - Not too sure about this as MMO, think it will fail no matter what, nobody wants to stay in a dark and evil place too long)

World of Starcraft - is almost guaranteed. but must be difficult to pull off, as I sure as hell don't want to get annoyed by thousands of aliens ;) (Disclaimer: never played Starcraft)

World of Warcraft - was a perfect fit for a MMO.

I believe their next-gen MMO will be a new franchise, I think they throw every boundary away and blow everything up :D

Why announce a game if the consumers aren't going to be able to buy or play it till like 1 to 2 years from now .. more of teas then anything. It's not just Blizzard but alot of game companys do this, It's been going on since late 80 aka E3 but way technology and how fast where envolving this is getting kinda of outdated with these announcements. Do know patience can be a bitch sometimes but rather have a announced game then 6 mnths later we consumers and players can play and buy the game then have to be hyped up for 1-2 or even 3 years wait getting kindaold espcially how fast everthing is moving..

I think it will be World of Starcraft. Warcraft 3 was a platform for WoW and I think Starcraft 2 will be seen as similar. Plus supporting a Sci Fi MMO and a Fantasy MMO fits together quite nicely for them.

if they made a Starcraft MMO with multiple worlds setup as zones / area instead of just regions on a continent, and they did it in a Mass Effect type "alive" universe, that would be really interesting.

have space faring travel, and clans become far more important to survival and to the ability to get around in the galaxy.
