Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Jun 23, 2008 6:30pm PDTSo in a supreme display of lunacy and commitment, or at least probable cause to be
committed, Nick Breckon actually just moved across the country last week to be our new San
Francisco writer. Our fine young man was actually posting from a hotel lobby today
stealing WiFi while he waits for his new home connection to show up tomorrow. Way to be
sassy, Nick! I've been doing this for nearly 15 years and my dad still doesn't think it's a
real job. I sure doubt he'd help me move across the country to do it!

He was supposed to come in on Friday and do the shoot, but one of the pieces of the product got delayed, meaning he had to come in today to shoot it. He dealt with our overbearing Director of Marketing extremely well and delivered a very nice shot that impressed her. So, Sparkly, thank you!

So I got a G15 we had lying around at work, and YAY it works with Trackmania but holy shit this is maybe the worst designed keyboard in the history of mankind. WTF I am having so much trouble typing anything. The middle row of keys seems to be shufted to the left or some shit that makes it torture to type. My fingers hurt.
Anyway - what is a good USB keyboard with a human-friendly key layout and mute button (very important) that works with Trackmania? anyone?

That alone makes it worth it. Holy shit, I can put it 3 feet away, between myself and the TV, with the TV low enough to not wake the neighbors and I can still hear it just fine.
SCORE!

As some of you know, I bought a Kindle last week. A few of you were interested in what I think of the device as I use it. I've had it for 5 days now, and here's what I got:
I love this device. I thought it was so ugly online, looked to difficult to hold, and frankly a little big. It's none of those, it's actually quite sexy in person; really thin, and very lite. The Rubberish coating on the back panel (that slides off to reveal the battery and SD slot) gives a great grip to it too if you use it without the cover.
The E-Ink screen is beautiful. Some people say the Sony E-Reader has better resolution, but having seen both, they look the same to me. The refresh time is really fast, it's really crisp and dark. My family/friends still can't get over how much it looks like paper. The EVDO works great; I've downloaded so many book samples so far (they give you the first chapter or two, and then you have the option to buy the book). I've already bought quite a few books, notably Snow Crash and some GRRM. The whole experience with the store is great; the layout is wonderful, it's easy to find what you're looking for, and easy to peruse at your leisure (I've found a few books I've been interested just by thumbing through the store).
The browser is what I expected; a cell phone browser on a larger screen. It does the job for what ever I'd really use it for; but I wouldn't mind if we had a mobile version of the Shack comments :) Oh, and Kindle NowNow is awesome; being able to ask a question and have humans research and answer it in under 10 minutes (for free), is really awesome. The quality of the answers is so impressive too.
Having used a Sony E-Reader before, and having read ebooks on a palm pda, the Kindle is light-years ahead. It's actually a bit hard to explain why; it's just the total package. Having this device that mimics paper, that's so comfortable to hold and view, with EVDO attached to it and access to thousands upon thousands of books whenever you want then, AND the ability to sample the first few chapters of any of them... it's more revolutionary than it may sound.
It's like I have this perfect terminal to literature; whatever I want (in most cases) is a click or two away, and I can read it in a manner I'm really comfortable with. It's actually a really powerful feeling. It's so easy to judge this device off of Amazon's site; the pictures you see, etc. But none of it does the thing justice. I wasn't really interested in it at first, partially because of the looks of the thing, and then the price. But as I noticed myself reading more and more, buying all these books, lugging them around... it started to make more sense. Honestly, the $359.99 I paid is WELL worth it; having used it now, I'd gladly pay more. I wish I could show you guys this thing in person, because that's really how it deserves to be judged. I kind of think Amazon is keeping it this way for a reason (not really pushing it as hard as they could), let it grow naturally with a core base and spread from there; they can scale the entire operation a lot easier.
Honestly, if you like to read, I can't recommend this thing enough. Feel free to ask me any questions you have, I don't think I can stop talking about the damned thing :)

I'm considering a new rig for Gaming. But I am REALLY out of touch with what's what. So I have a few questions for those in the know.
a) How is Vista for a gaming rig these days? If crap then should I wait for a new OS from MS to come out?
b) Scale of 1-10 how does this rate for a "Gaming rig"

c) Intel or AMD? ATI or Nvidia?
d) dual or quad core?
Halp!

Normally I'll play through a game, then come back to it a couple months later and knock out the achievements if they're not ridiculous. I've being doing Vet COD4 missions, and had no trouble with some. However, Safehouse has just been a fucking nightmare for me. After an hour of attempts I'm giving up, because I'm afraid my anger at this stupid shit is going to ruin a great game for me.
When do you throw in the towel, and what achievements made you do it?

I've gone from being able to carry my laptop, charger, a couple of CDs and some USB cables to my laptop, mixer, headphones, external hard drive, a G5 mouse, 10 metre long sound cables, USB cables, charger, power cables, camera, iPod, CDs, books, a spare t-shirt and contraception for when the ladies see my backpack.
And the scary thing is I can still fit shit into it. Hell yeah!
