First Screenshots from DICE's Mirror's Edge Released

Stockholm-based EA DICE, the studio responsible for the successful Battlefield franchise, has released the first screenshots from its upcoming sandbox action game Mirror's Edge, announced last July and said to draw from the rooftop-jumping sport of parkour. (Update: They can be found at the On Mirror's Edge fansite.)

The screenshots depict a dense urban landscape rendered in a high-contrast, painterly style that Shacknews' Jeff Gondek described as "almost Sid Mead-esque."

When the game was announced, senior producer Owen O'Brien said, "We want to enable the player to move like a real person, with the ability to run, jump, vault and slide in a way that has never been seen before." Mirror's Edge is expected to ship for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 some time in 2008.

Funny to see this, I remember an article a while back about a designer at Bungie talking about how a first person climber would be cool, and here is one...
Looks good though, pretty nice color palette as others have said.

Most games with urban environments either feature tall dark mirror buildings, or lots of grey concrete. This looks refreshingly colorful.

The lighting in those screenshots is quite impressive. I don't think I've ever seen any other large scale outdoor urban environment lit so well.. except maybe Bionic Commando.
I'm curious to see it in real time..

Looks tantalizing. I think we will be seeing a lot more art in a similar style. It's pretty natural to see game developers going the visual way of SYD mead.

Yeah, realistic cuz they always call out the SWAT helos when them walljumpers show up. One question, can I be in one of those Helos picking off walljumpers with my minigun as they try to get by me? That I would sign up for.
