Duke Nukem 3D Multiplayer Menz

Here's the full setup guide to get playing with us. It's important that all versions match, so follow this precisely.

Make sure you have the .grp from Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition 1.5. Any other version will not work.

Then get eDuke32 from http://www.eduke32.com/downloads
Specifically, http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/eduke32/eduke32-1.4.0_beta_2.exe

Install to a directory without spaces, and with less than 8 characters (game dir and parent dirs). Use C:\Games\eDuke32 for example.

Run the Setup, try the different graphics modes until you get one that runs well. I can only run 8bpp for some reason, but it looks fine anyway.
Make sure to set your binds ingame before you jump into a multi game.

Now, get Dukonnector from http://duke3d.vachu.com/files.html
Specifically, http://duke3d.vachu.com/dukon0.8.1.zip

It needs the .Net Framework 2.0, so make sure you install that first, or 3.0 through Microsoft Update.

Now, drop the two Dukonnector files in your Duke game directory, and run Dukonnector.exe from there. This will automatically setup all the variables for loading Duke and make things much more fail-proof.

Connect to the Master Server without registering if you're lazy, register if you aren't.

Now go to Settings, change your Nick Name. Next, go to connection, and test your ports. If they fail, mess around with any software or hardware firewalls and get your ports forwarded.

Once all that's set, join us in one of the more obvious rooms, and click Check with Host to be sure your .grp and eDuke .exe match.

If so, everything should work.

Hopefully once we get everyone sorted we can have regular free for alls.

Feedback Request: ArmA: Combat Operations

I would be interested in hearing feedback from people who have played ArmA (including the demo) and had issues with it. This feedback will be considered when crafting feature requests and general developmental suggestions and requests that may or may not influence ArmA2 depending on the alignment of the planets, the number of virgins that can be blood-sacrificed by then, and how many people rolled their eyes when they saw a Dslyecxi post that had ArmA within the first few lines.

I am particularly interested in the following areas:
- Accessibility
- Interface
- Controls
- Visuals
- AI
- Gameplay

The more specific you can be, the more useful it will be to me. General comments like "lol AI" are next to worthless, whereas telling me that you wish your squad maintained cohesion better via things like fireteams, buddy teams, etc is useful.

You will not break my heart by criticizing ArmA. Post away if you are at all interested in potentially having a positive influence on ArmA2.

TL;DR GF impressed, but not in a good way, with Bioshock. And what is with this violence thing anyway?

So I showed my gf Bioshock last night by playing through the 360 demo. I'd been talking about it and wanted her to see what all the fuss is about. Her reaction got me thinking, though. What happened was she sat there with her mouth open, quite stunned by the violence in the game. Meanwhile, I was going on about the art direction, the sound design, the music, and of course the graphical fidelity, etc.

I was struck by how different her reaction was to the game than what I initially expected. But it was her very reaction that got me thinking about stuff Remo has mentioned, namely that he would have been happy to play through a game like this with little or even no combat at all (it's a world that is that rich) and gamers' own conception of what it is they play. What I mean is, I didn't even think about the violence in the game until I saw her revulsion (her first words after watching it were, "When we have kids, I'm not letting that in my house."), but her reaction actually shocked me into realizing just how intensely violent a game it really is. Quite odd, given how much has been made of its other qualities. But it seems to me that, to the layperson, more often than not all they will perceive is a blistering salvo of ultraviolence rendered with sickening splats and explosions and sprays of blood and gore.

What's ironic here is that this same woman also loves the movie 300 to death.

Yet isn't that movie also filled to the brim with savage, unrelenting violence? Yes, I do believe it is. So what gives?

I think what gives is that there really does seem to be a difference between how people perceive violence where they're just a passive actor (e.g. watching) and how they perceive that same violence when they're participating in it, even if "virtually." (The pastiche of scenes that runs at the end of the demo certainly did little to back off the characterization of the game as being about little more than wild slaughter.)

Old news? Maybe. But it certainly got me thinking more critically about this debate over violence and its impact on behaviour. Do gamers need to "admit" that there's more to being critical of videogame violence than a Thompson-esque diatribe best ignored?

Anyway, she had nightmares about the game (ironic, because that means the game "worked" on one level as intended, but on another as perhaps less intended and less desirable).

Just something to think about.

I suck at grinding. Faceplanting, however, I excel at. This game is so much fun though. I love how my dude just falls dead whenever he wrecks. I KILLED HIM.

My timing is seriously horrible. I managed to do all the challenges, but half the time I'm pulling triggers and tweaking sticks (oOoo) to get points, I barely know what I'm doing. This game needs to come out so I can play w/o the timer.

PS: I'm mostly pissed because I've had that card for 5 years and had the # memorized, and now I have to be issued a new card. Amex said getting the charges taken off should be no problem because they never authorized the transaction on their end... someone at Old Navy manually pushed the charge through, so something fishy is up.

Cool. It was a faulty DVD drive that was fucking me over with BioShock.

I've played a bit into it, but no so far. Just at the Medical Pavillion area now. It chugs a bit, but I'm still messing with it on the old PC (Opteron 165, 2 gigs ram, 7900 GTX).
Any good tweaks for it going around?

so screw the female issues, I don't have time for that---I've got a 40 page paper to write. I asked my professor if I could write about the Beatles and he says they've been written about way too much. I also cannot cover the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, or Led Zeppelin. I'm debating moving out of the 60's/70's and into the early nineties. What do you guys think of My Bloody Valentine as being a highly influential band? i recently made a trip to vegas and lived out my counterstrike dream of shooting the colt and five seven. i've handled "all metal" airsoft before and surprisingly, the real thing feels very similar. however, that's where the similarities end.

the noise and recoil they make is awesome! holy shit! on full auto, the colt was pretty hard to control and get tight groupings with. but as you can see, both terrorists were dead, the hostage was not shot, and the bomb was untouched. i think i'm gonna go out and get me a handgun license.
