Sony Denies Upcoming PS3 Price Cut
by Chris Remo, Jul 05, 2007 4:39pm PDTUpdate: Speaking to Bloomberg, Sony president Ryoji Chubachi has repudiated claims of an upcoming PlayStation 3 price drop. "We have no immediate plans as of now," said Chubachi in regard to the reports. The statement contradicts an alleged confirmation of an overall $100 retail price drop by a retail manager, as reported by GameDaily yesterday. It is possible that Sony indeed plans to launch a price adjustment in the near future, but hopes to keep the news under wraps until its press conference at E3 in Santa Monica next week. Circuit City's own discount, effective July 15-21, appears to remain valid. Original story: A Circuit City advertising flyer showing an upcoming $100 discount on PlayStation 3 consoles may in fact be a retail-wide price adjustment by Sony, suggests internet reports today. Rumors originated from scans of the ad, which lists the console with a price point of $499.99 as of July 15. "$100 price break," it reads. No mention was made of the 20GB PlayStation 3 model, available at launch but recently dropped entirely from certain territories including North America. GameDaily followed up with claims of confirmation of a retail-wide $100 price drop as of July 12, which it sources to an anonymous retail manager "at one of the world's biggest retailers." If today's reports are accurate, Sony Computer Entertainment America will likely announce the news during its E3 press conference next week, scheduled to be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, July 11. Shacknews will have live report coverage of the proceedings. SCEA had not responded to Shacknews' inquiries on the matter at the time this story was published.

I agree with Sony that the PS3 should be worth more because of the additional functionality. BluRay, included Hard Drive, faster processor, etc. Sony has marketed this as a home multimedia center.
But that's not what consumers are looking for. They want something that is first and foremost a gaming machine. The additional functionality is nice, if it doesn't add to the cost.
So, what have we learned from this generation of consoles?
1. More people want to play games than just the fanboys. Nintendo got this, Microsoft sort of got this, Sony totally missed it.
2. There is more to gaming than just faster graphics, more sound effects, and more complex game play. Again, Nintendo got it, Microsoft sort of gets it, Sony totally missed it.
3. People are looking for gaming machines first, additional features are nice if they don't add to the cost. Nintendo gets this. Microsoft almost gets this, their extra features do cost a bit more, but not a lot and are optional if you want the online content. Sony totally missed this.
4. Tying your console to an unproven drive technology is stupid, especially when the format is still being revised. Even more stupid if it violates number 3. Sony totally blew it.
5. Harddrives are still not necessary for good gaming, but if you are going to have one on some models, you better have them on all models. Nintendo made the right decision for their platform and it's worked nicely. MS made the mistake of having two SKUs, one with and one without and this has caused nightmares for programmers. Sony did okay on this.
6. If you are going to make your machine HiDef, then you damn sure need to include the right connectors and cables. Nintendo is the only one that got this right from the start and only by not making HiDef part of the equation.
7. After a year (or more) in the market, developers are still having difficulty with the new hardware.
8. Microsoft still doesn't know how to market in Japan.
9. Sony has no fucking clue what consumers want anymore. Instead of asking us what we want, they're telling us, with predictable results.
10. Nintendo understands gaming like no other company right now.
11. PC gaming has nothing to worry about. It's the only stable, predictable platform right now. Additionally, while console gaming has improved, it still isn't cable of giving you the immersive experience of gaming on a computer.

There are no games out that, to me, warrant a $500+ game console.
I don't have an HD-DVD... I don't own any blue-ray discs... Where's the value?

No price cuts any time soon.
Come on guys, this is the same company that said the messed up button on the PSP was by design and that people would work harder to get the money for the PS3. They are WAY to proud to admit they are failing hard core and need to drop their price.
The PS3 is now four hundred and ninety-nine US Dollars!

"Sony Corp. has no plans to cut the price of its PlayStation3 (PS3) at present to pep up demand and counter surging sales of Nintendo's rival game console Wii, Sony's president said on Friday.
"At present we have no plans," to cut the PS3 price, Ryoji Chubachi told Reuters in an interview."

Brutal. But if this is what it takes to recover from an anemic launch and first two quarters, do it.

Now that it's much better, have they changed the price back? Hell no. haha... Well, actually Walmart brought it back to $659.
In fact, it isn't much better with the 360, but at least MS throws in a couple free games here to try to make up the difference.
