  to be honest it isn't a valid comparison. if you really want to break it down you'd have to cut out new machine sales (since all the oems have adopted vista at the same pace they adopted xp, so you are just getting data about how many PCs are sold), and factor in deployment for win2k and winme/win98 when XP was released, since XP was a relatively minor upgrade from win2k making it an easier purchase.
