Battlefield 2142, Other EA Titles to Have In-Game Ads (Updated)
by Chris Remo, Aug 31, 2006 5:04am PDTElectronic Arts today issued two separate press releases, each announcing agreements that will provide in-game advertising for upcoming EA games. Today's first announcement describes an agreement with New York-based in-game advertising firm IGA Worldwide, which will see an unspecified number of EA franchises implement in-game advertising. The first game that will see ads from IGA is Digital Illusions CE's Battlefield 2142, which will be receiving dynamic ads tailored to players' physical locations. Interestingly, the press release also states that ads will be customized by platform, though the game has been announced only for PC, suggesting that the game may eventually be coming to other systems. "Consumers are increasingly gaming in deep, virtual worlds and advertisers need adapted ways to reach these audiences," said European VP for Online and Strategic Relationships Frank Sagnier. "The agreement with IGA is a first step in a detailed strategy to deliver advertising in a seamless format." It was not specified what type of real world brands will be used to seamlessly and realistically integrate modern advertising into the fictional setting of a war-themed game set in 2142. The second announcement is regarding a deal with Massive Incorporated, an in-game advertising firm purchased by Microsoft earlier this year, and allows for up to four Xbox 360 and PC games from EA to be outfitted with in-game ads. EA Black Box's Need for Speed Carbon will be the first title affected by the deal. Though EA notes that the Need for Speed series has included static advertising in past games, Carbon will also include dynamic ads that are related to players' specific geographic locations and gaming platforms. "In places like a basketball court, football stadium or roadside in a racing game, advertising is not only nice to have, but it's an essential component to create the fiction of being there," said EA VP of Online Commerce Chip Lange. "This agreement with Massive allows us to vary what relevant ads are served to the game player." The announcement notes that Massive's technology allows for a variety of media types, including images, audio, video, and actual game objects, to be used in advertising. Financial terms behind the deals announced today were not disclosed. Update: Shacknews has received a response to various inquiries posed to EA regarding these deals. In regards to brands that will be used in Battlefield 2142, EA is not yet announcing specific companies. "We don't have any specific brands [to announce], but as we have said about any kind of ads in the past, they will be authentic and not distracting and in terms of being irrelevant of the time [period]," said an EA representative. "They will be contextually relevant." The company also clarified that the statement about multiple platforms in the Battlefield 2142 announcement is only a general statement about IGA's in-game advertising methods and does not indicate that 2142 will be a multiplatform game.

You won't me finding me paying for a game with advertising. Oh wells.
I think EA should just put his face on an ad in the game and walk away laughing.
1. Games without ads for $59.
2. Games with ads for $29.
Please please please either discount the price, or keep the ads out. If you must, please increase your game costs to $79 if ads are the only thing keeping you over the BE point, so that your competition can destroy you.

you can't use the "it'll be distracting" arguement since you don't know how they'll look in-game, which, according to the press releases, won't be distracting at all. they won't be as distracting as the in game billboards you see in other games.
and does it really matter that they'll be making money off this? god-forbid they actually pull in some income to pay their employees. not sure if you know this, but PC game sales aren't as good as they use to be. gotta pay the developers somehow and be able to support the patches (if any) which take employees' time and work to produce.

1- get a portion of the advertising earnings.
2- resell advertising space of their own on a server they host?
I for one will not host a server so that they can make advertising $$. Why in the heck should my game client get updated just for the sake of showing me ads. I don't like where this is going.
I don't care which way you look at it, for or against, that's a lot of SPAM!

I could see a problem with this if they wanted to put billboards for Swatch in a RPG like Dark Messiah, but they aren't and never will. Even if some jackass company does makes the decsion to have a Mac and Cheese ad in the middle of their dungeon crawling game, I wouldn't expect that game to be very good in the first place.
These ads in these certain types of games are good for the buisness, not bad. This means more and more companies are taking games serious as a way to get things to the auidence. They do the same things with movies. Everyone uses an Apple laptop, they drink Aquafina and use the latest cellphone. This just means buisness is good and getting better.

I didn't have too much interest in either title before; just a mild one, but this pretty much throws it out the window. I won't be bothering with either title now that they've chosen to throw ads in there.
I do however, hope everyone who works at Massive and IGA Worldwide, dies in a fire for coming up with this shit.

Is this really much different then this move by publishers? IMO we'll see the big major titles using adverstising just like mainstream entertainment does (moves, sports ect) and the little independants getting by without it.
I don't think the sky is falling yet.
I try to avoid ads as much as possible in my daily life. I switch off commercials and I especially do not buy products with logos plastered all over them for products that I really don't give a shit about. Why would the same not apply for games? I just don't want to see that shit. I have zero desire to play a part in what only amounts to some advertiser seeing an opportunity to exploit a medium and put ads where they don't belong. Why should you?

I'm not completely against ads in games, if done right and in a way that isn't jarring and removes you from the experience, then that's fine. But I think EA has problems with making great games these days, and I think they should turn their attention to address that problem, not throwing another punch our way.
if you buy these games, you are part of the problem
they sure as fuck aren't providing any benefit to the consumer

I'll spend money on games that draw my in to rich experiences, not jar me out with a Subway ad.

Easily solved by not buying it. Im not a fan of episodic content either where you get 4 hours of gameplay for $20 bucks so I don't buy it either.

We're getting bombarded everyday with this stuff through medium like Xbox Live and sports games (rotating ad backgrounds), etc.
I'm numb to it, really. If I get to blow the sign up as part of the scenery, then that's a plus! Other than that, it really doesn't make that big of a difference or cause a problem. We all knew it would get to this point, EA or not.

Would you be ok with nothing but porn related ads? Sniper rifles and titties? Is that so bad?
BF 2142 hacked already :{
http://digitalbattle.com/2006/08/29/bf2142-hacked-already/
I buy a game for a certain amount of money, this money is my partial payment for the development, publishing and care of the product.
Why then have advertising? I'd rather buy a game for 50 USD and not have to see any adds from places i can't go to or products i cannot buy here (EU) anyway.
In BF2 there were from the beginning several ways to unlock the weapon kits for LAN players or single-player mode, I wonder how long it will take for someone to mod BF2142 so that there is no adds to be seen or only their own clan logo etc.
Plus ... anyone who is annoyed of this will very quickly edit their HOSTS file.
