Today marked me getting a brand-spanking-new TrackIR 4 from NaturalPoint, for use in the Armed Assault preview I'll be doing in the not-too-distant future. As I've said before, they (as in Naturalpoint) are totally sweet and awesome.
Previously I've used the TrackIR2, which sported 2 degrees of freedom - pitching and yawing. The TrackIR4 is a whole new beast that can track the full 6 degrees of freedom - yaw, pitch, roll, X, Y, and Z movement.
In a word, it's awesome. I've really been looking forward to an FPS having native support for these things, and it looks like ArmA's going to do a great job of it (you can see it here: http://dslyecxi.com/screens/Armed_Assault/prerelease/PCF_Arma_TIR_p2.wmv ).
Anyhow, I took some footage in Aces High II, which supports the full 6DOF, and cut it into a video to show off to whoever was interested. I've been very impressed by how easy this new iteration is to use - it's far more user-friendly and natural than the TIR2 I had before. These things are awesome, and I hope against hope that ArmA ends up being the game that really sells developers on supporting these.
You can download the video here:
http://dslyecxi.com/screens/Aces_High_II/trackir4_aces_high_2.wmv
It's a beefy 77MB of pure TrackIR4 awesomeness.
For more info about the whole TrackIR thing, you can find their site here:
http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/
I'll try to get some pics + video in the future of what it looks like for the user who's controlling stuff like what you see in that footage. It's quite cool, in a geeky sort of way. :D

Ok, so my 360 was working perfectly. Then lately, it'd lock up while playing Dead Rising on occasion. Then it got stuck on the splash screen. Then 4 red lights.
I unplugged everything and replugged it all, and the 360 appeared to be working. But now, anytime I insert a game disk into the drive, it locks up within a minute. Doesn't matter if I stay at the title screen, doesn't matter if I load the game.
Within about 60 seconds, my 360 locks up. It's fine when playing XBL Arcade games though.
The room I have the 360 is not very hot, and the conditions have been hotter in the past. The 360 isn't on the carpet, nor is the power supply.
Thoughts, shack?

Could have done without the horrible clapping animations at the end, but still lotsa fun :)

The machine hasn't been updated/changed in six months, not connected to a network. I just restart the service sound is working again. The service is set to run on startup. It is late so I'm probably missing the obvious thing here.

Okay, so Macworld.com has Mac Pro benches up.. and a few eyebrow raisers here
http://www.macworld.com/2006/08/firstlooks/macprobench/index.php
ignoring photoshop, since that's running in rosetta, on the Cinema 4D/Compressor/iMovie benches, the a quad G5 is holding in there for dear life against the woodcrests, yes the mac pro is marginally faster, but it's also got a marginally faster clock, so ~ to that, the good news is that the G5 is shining with hand tuned altivec, the woodcrest is being a beast on code that simply hasn't had the chance to be tuned as finely.
the real O_O is the Unreal Tournament 2004 numbers, at least at first, and then I realised that they're likely to be comparing a GF6600 with a GF7300GT
The TL;DR is Mac Pro = fast
This was supposed to be a longer, more in depth and analytical post, and then I realised that the MP and PM weren't using the same graphics chip
I would have liked to have played that Company of Heroes beta but I missed out - I wasn't interested because it sounded like a stupid COD clone.

Have any of your unis over there opened departments for video games or the 'interactive arts?' I've been tossing around the idea of heading to grad school over on your side of the pond, and since that's where my undergrad research is now, I think it'd be pretty cool to keep that on, if a grad school would have me.
