Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Nov 16, 2005 6:00pm PSTWell I really enjoyed the article format for that Will Wright interview. I do believe I'll nudge Chris towards more stuff like that. Oh and more TV show scripts!
- Secret government UFO files worthless - USA still rockin the net - Content delivery clash - Horse cloning is hot - Windows Live isnt deadLastly, that Netflix suit is over with and consumers get nothing. Oh by the way, Netflix used to ship out my stuff really fast. Now I'm lucky to have a 5 day turnaround. Time to cancel. :(

Gentlemen, I need all of your taint/gross-out images for a prank to pull on a friend. However, I don't want to get tainted myself, so direct image links would be great. Don't let me down, shackmenz!

Sigh. Long story short I got my first credit card -- and in fact still my ONLY credit card -- when I was young (because I was going overseas and it was more of a precautionary thing just in case I needed money) and my Dad has been the primary card holder. Well that's been a pain, but I''ve learned to deal with it. (Anytime I need to make a change on the card, I have to jump through hoops, give them HIS personal info etc.) So anyways Nov 05 comes around, my card expires end of month, time for a new card.
And even longer story short, I just found out that because my Dad is the primary card owner -- he doesn't even use it, I am the only person who uses it -- that everything I have done with this card has been helping HIS credit rating and doing absolutely NOTHING for mine. (That's what the bank just told me).
So here I am, 32, and basically it's like I've never even owned a credit card as far as the bank is concerned. Nice. :/ And yet also somehow my credit rating is really good?

Online Othello/Reversi
http://www.railthello.com/
The AI is now a better player. It now bases its decisions on:
* number of pieces to be captured
* strategic value of specific spots (i.e. corners and edges are high value, middle of the board is low)
Still to come: the AI will look into its opponent's avaible moves next turn and try to minimize their options. If it can make its opponent pass their next turn, than that move will be given a very high priority.
Also in 0.3.1, the replay list now shows the score of the games as well. This way you can watch how someone got that 64-0 score.
Watch the AI (white) snag those corners!

So I won 1 round-trip ticket / hotel / transportation to the MS event in Palmdale for the Xbox launch.
But, after checking priceline/expedia, it seems it will cost me about 1000 bucks in airfare to get the rest of my family (wife, 2 small kids) out there as well.
So, I can't go.
Do I just decline the trip (which I can do, and still get the Xbox360/games etc), or is there some other option, like sell the trip on ebay, or .... I dunno?
I just hate declining the trip :(

What's up with the PSP?
Cool game #1 - Front Mission 5: http://the-magicbox.com/0511/game051109a.shtml
Cool game #2 - Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast
Cool game #3 - the new Virtua Tennis
Now, which of these games will be the one that gets approved for localization and releasing in the US?

- Long live the solar power station. A tad on the pricey side, but talk about a license to print money! No primary resources, just crystals as a secondary, which are easy to come by. You can drop them anywhere and they'll do business since energy cubes are required by basically every ship and factory. And the best part is that people come to you to buy it, so you don't have to buy a Mercury/etc and have it trapesing around the universe selling stuff. My medium-sized plant nets me about $100k/hour, so I just tell it to shunt all credits over the $50k limit into my account, and rack up the moola while exploring (jesus christ this map is huge). Need to start peppering the universe with those things and make myself a gin-you-wine energy tycoon!
- For the love of god, don't shoot at the Kha'ak Clusters (pronounced "cock", if you've never played the game. I'm not joking). Bad things happen.

All of those skeptics, like myself only a few weeks ago - dual core is the shit.
It's not me just seeing it because I spent $$, it's not me seeing it because the CPU's faster (it was accidentally at 1156mhz) - windows and specifically explorer is just plain fucking snappier and I mean like 2x snappier.
I have 5 hard disks in here at the mo - I am still in the process of trying to rescue data and piddle around - hell I'm in 800x600x16bit and can't go higher due to a 1mb pci card
but i can damn well assure you, as someone who's always hated explorer - this is DAMN snappy and response - how fricking awesome.

I'm just trying to do my homework and somehow end up reading this -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Irving for the past 20 minutes.
In the early 1990s, a German court found him guilty of breaking laws forbidding the denial of the Nazi extermination of Jews, and he was subsequently fined and barred from entering Germany.
I didn't know there were actual laws about that - free speech, etc? Does the German government make an exception when it comes to things related to the Holocaust?

Sorry for all the emo(?) posts, this is the last one I promise.
Friend of mine is buying a new car. Likes the Mazda 3. She doesn't want a standard. Salesperson tries to explain to her about the "5-speed Sport mode automatic transmission" on this car, which he tells her "lets you drive it like a standard".
For someone who is not a car person (and I know there are a bunch of car buffs on here. Dolemite?), what is this 'Sport mode' transmission exactly?
Does this mean the car will automatically switch gears for you (duh like an automatic) but you have the option to do it yourself at anytime?

This week, Clark, Texas, morphed into DISH in exchange for a decade of free satellite television from the DISH Network for the town's 55 homes. Residents in Santa, Idaho, meanwhile, are weighing the pros and cons of changing to Secretsanta.com, Idaho.
Across the nation, small communities are being courted by large corporations who say renaming a town provides a marketing buzz that can't be bought in television ads. Though some worry about corporate America's increasing influence in local government, many towns seem eager to accept.
My favorite part is the picture caption, which reads in part:
Chris Doane with Dish Network assembles a dish outside DISH town hall, Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, in DISH, Texas.

I can't believe the chineese are going to get one of these rebadged as a buick. You aussies have such sweet cars, I wish more aussie cars were being imported but I think the GTO killed that idea.

The other day I wasn't able to start the MSSQLServer Service on two seperate SQL Server 2000 boxes. I checked the event log on both boxes and saw that DB 'model' was in the middle of restore for the last 12 hours. Did some technet fun and found http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822852 which solved the problem.
Today I am seeing a couple of my DB's now also in "middle of restore" and unable to open. Do you think the issues are related and is there a good fix (besides removing the DB and loading a backup) to get these DB's back online?
TIA

I had an idea. Go through your Friends Roster on Nintendo WFC and reply to this thread with the people who HAVEN'T added you to their lists yet (you know if when you select that friend, the top screen states "If you still see this screen after registering each other's friend codes and connecting to Nintendo WFC, please check your friend codes for accuracy.") Hopefully we can break all these missing links and get 4 player matches finally.

So I traded in my GBA SP for a DS last night, they didn't have Mario Kart in at the EB I was at so I went for Phoenix Wright instead, and plan on picking up Mario Kart this weekend.
I've found I have 6 dead pixels between the two screens, how does that compare to the rest of the DS owners out there, and do you think it's worth taking it back?
Also, Phoenix Wright is quite fun.

You know that's a good review (and I rated it as such) but honestly it makes me NOT want to get the add-on because the worst thing about R:TW, imho, was the BS revolts and factions springing up out of nowhere.
Oh well, that's helpful to me as far as reviews go because at least I know I don't want to spend the $$ on it right now.

How do you do it? I was looking around in the bios last night and there is a lot of FSB options in there. Alot more options then my nforce 2 board. For the Nforce2 all I had to do was set the FSB and the multiplier and off I go the nforce4 stuff looks a bit more complicated.

Went on to EBGames and they were pretty sure they had preorders to cover all the premium systems they would get but supposedly will get a second delivery around 16th December or so. They seemed to still have a few Core systems though.
Then I realized I probably want to import the system anyway so I don't have to buy the games here in Sweden... Because if they jack the prices to 70 bucks in the US they will probably be like 90 bucks here in Sweden. :( So I went home without preordering and now I don't know what to do...
