id Software Lawsuit

According to a subscription-only story on the Wall Street Journal website, id software co-founder Adrian Carmack has filed a lawsuit against the Mesquite, Texas based developer following his dismissal from the company earlier this year. According to Carmack, he was fired by the other owners after he wouldn't take a $20 million buyout offer, and contends id turned down an acquisition offer from Activision just to get his shares for a lower price. This supposed Activision offer, made last year, offered id Software $90 million for the rights to Quake, DOOM and Wolfenstein and supposedly Activision was considering a $105 million bid for the entire company as well. According to the court filing, Carmack claims his share would've been 41%. Thanks Blues News.

  • I think the people should buy the company.
    The Gamers.
    Make it public!

Then you dont have to worry about EA or Activision.
    Its all shareware.;)
    Open Source.
It already is. That what he keeps preaching about.
    3 Engines Later.
and all can be bought at a low price!
and this should make you a member of the company
I know the first 2 engines are 10 grand.
    so what?
    30 grand?
for a piece of the company.
    Maybe another price? More?
and there would be a huge market in the beginning!
so they would get there money.

    If he sells the company?
isnt that like patenting a product?

and if the company is worth supposedly 105 million
    most likely more!
    thats why they havent sold.
150 million, even 200 million sounds better to me
    thats alot of engines
and you could only buy them once.
    just to make things fair!
then maybe a fee to actually publish multiple games.

    i guess i should ask,before i go on.
what was activision going to do with id after they bought it?

Let them finish one last engine?
    one last GREAT game!
go out with a huge bang!!
    controversy and all
all to build the hype with!

    then what?
    john leaves!?
and they continue to make new technology using the id name!
    eeeh.
    i can see it!

New Engine comes out! Cant wait!!

and the fans are going to eat it up!
but are they going to keep releasing the engines?
or letting modders mod the engines?
or are they going to sell out?

id isnt id, with out the brains.
he knows that, you know that!
thats why everyone else is gone!
    or leaving.

yes, he may consult on the engines?!
giving it his seal of approval.

but like the doom movie, theyll never be as good!

So why even waste our money.
unless its going to benefit us.
    Thats common sense!

I think the entire crap behind Johns dictatorship.
    is child like.
these men who helped him build that company>
    Got screwed.
    Obviously.
    why?
because he sat at his desk all day and worked and never had fun.
    why is that there fault?
Greed it sounds like to me?

I did it all, its mine.!!!

    Yea!?

but he wouldnt be anything without his fans.

Like they said before, there are better engines out there.

  • I think the real point is here, AC is being forced to sell his share of the company purely because the others forced him out.

Obviously he thinks his share is worth more than the offer. I don't see that id has any interest in giving AC a "fair" value. They have him by the balls anyway. They could offer him a ball of lint if he is bound to sell by contract, it would seem.

AC probably has a good argument that id's offer of 20mil is not "fair" purely due to the offer from Activision. That offer establishes a reasonable overall value for the company. Really from TFA, it sounds like AC has a good point, if nothing else.

To me, 20mil for 41% share in id sounds lowball.

    Wow?
