Quake 4 Interview

6

Worthplaying had the opportunity to sit down with id Software's Tim Willits at QuakeCon and talk to him about Quake 4. There are questions about attention to detail, game length ("Quake 4 is shorter than Doom 3"), naming the player character, story, and episodic development.

TW: It’s actually quite simple why he has a name: we have this squad and they talk to you and also about you. We didn’t want them to just say “Hey, Mr. Nameless Marine!” So, naming your character just fit the script. That’s the TRUE answer, but the PR answer would be “Yeah we felt that we could connect with the players, give them a sense of identity, etc.”

Haha :) Truth : 1, Marketing bullshit: 0. That answer makes the decision sound reasonable and not like of a bunch of crap.
