EA Gets Nearly 60% Of DICE Shares

Electronic Arts has announced that it has completed its tender offer to the shareholders of Battlefield developer Digital Illusions (DICE), and now owns a controlling 59.8% interest in the company. EA also owns warrants, which if exercised, can bump their stake in the company's share sto 67.3%.

Correct me if im wrong but don't large fat wallet companies go on buying sprees like this when they realize that what they do themselves actually stinks so they need people to do it for them before they sink?

Or is it all done to give the shareholders something to be happy about?

this isn't necessarily as horrible a situation as it seems. At least the guys at DICE won't have to worry about funding, and who knows what will really happen. I, personally, haven't seen too many games that publishers have ruined. I am sure some people would like to vent and prove me wrong, and please do so. I'd like to know more about it.

Alas, poor Battlefield, I hardly knew ye. I dismissed the first one because my VIA chipset computer before the PFD patch could not run the BF1942 demo without crashing right after loading, and I didn't like what I saw on a friend's computer while he was playing it. But now it looks like they'll milk the engine and franchise dry.

Luckily, I'm sure BF2 is far enough into development that it's grandeur won't be affected very much.

However, we can be certain EA will push it out the door before DICE is ready. And then we'll have to wait 6 months for a patch that EA probably won't give them funding to make. Bastards.

Seriously, EA has done bad things with their titles, but they are easily going to be buying into the most "modern" engine for military games. Military games sell, they are basically buying the Battlefield franchise and I'm sure they will expand that make the MoH series use the new engine.

Basically instead of EA licensing id's engine for the next 5 years, they own an engine and can license it out themselves.

If EA treats the DICE people bad, they will leave to make another game company.
