Steam Update

12

A new update for Steam has been released, updating both the application itself, the Source engine in general and the Half-Life 1 Dedicated Server. As always you have to restart Steam to get the update.

is it just me that feels that steam should be able to look for updates say once a day at random to find updates then apply them? having to restart it whenever i see an article here (thanks) that steam has updated, it's a big PITA.

You leave steam running all the time?

That's your folly right there, imo. I don't need another app sitting in my systray doing stuff on its own when I'm not playing some steam game.

yes i leave it running, not like it's going to eat up all my ram or anything, just like i leave almost everything else open that i use often.
and when i want to play, i want to play now, not in 5 minutes after it finishes updating.

you also have to concider the general user that just plays games but has no clue on much else, have you seen the system tray on some of those computer? nothing is ever closed.

You're right that it is a little strange that it only looks for updates on start up. I mean you'd only have to check once an hour for an improvement.

once an hour would be a little excesive, but once a day i think would be fine

it wouldn't be that excessive. it wouldn't require much data transfer at all

ironically, with this steam update, steam loads up pretty fast for me now. (maybe it isn't irony, who cares.)

i agree it's stupid to have to restart the app for an update to take place. why make an app that handles updates etc if it has to be restared in order to perform this function? why not just add a check for updates button?

Because Windows doesn't let you update it if it's running?

other programs will update while running. they may have to do an auto restart to replace some files. you don't have to shut down your antivirus and restart for example to check for updates.

That's updating a file with all the virus definitions in it though, not the actual .exe

Plenty of programs do exactly this. All-Seeing Eye for example. Downloads the exe, closes, overwrites the old one, and relaunches. It's not that difficult. I would really like to see auto-update implemented.

all it has to do is check for updates - it can then give the option to actually update.
