New UT In The Works?
by Maarten Goldstein, Oct 16, 2004 9:30am PDTIn a post by Angel Munoz of The CPL on cached.net, responding to comments about the CPL deciding to use Painkiller as their 2005 World Tour game over UT2004 or other games, he mentions this about Unreal Tournament. Thanks BeyondUnreal.
People wondering why we did not pick UT 2004. First realize that Epic is a huge supporter of CPL. The CEO Mark Rein is a friend of mine and Cliffy B is on our advisory board. A wide range of aspects were taken into consideration, including publisher/developer support for the entire tour. Unfortunately, Epic is transitioning to a new publisher and it was not expected that their current publisher would help us in marketing the game/tour through the end 2005. Additionally, there is a new UT in the works, but it was not going to be available in the time frame we needed. Mark and I are still in conversations about the 2006 World Tour.

"BeyondUnreal has learned that these rumors are false. While it's common knowledge that Epic plans to release an Unreal Engine 3 powered UT sometime in the future, Epic's Mark Rein has informed us that the developer's next PC title (the elusive 'Next Big Thing') won't be appearing until Q1 2006 at the earliest. Understandably, this means we can rule out any new installments to the Unreal Tournament series between now and then."
With Quake and Quake 3 I was playing duels every day but I haven't played online in ages now because there isn't a decent deathmatch game for duels. Quake 4 is sounding promising though with its Quake 3 like gameplay and no stupid vehicles. I can't wait.
I'd also like to see the CPL make its own game which is continually updated so there wouldn't be these periods when there's no decent duel game to play. I might actually pay attention to the CPL then, but if I don't like the game I'm really not intersted in coverage of their events.

For a pure multiplayer FPS, I can't quite see that coming.
And I must admit that the U2 engine looks kinda pale opposed to modern engines now...
