DOOM 3 Requirements, Carmack's Next
by Maarten Goldstein, Jul 20, 2004 1:10pm PDTThe daily DOOM 3 post! The Houston Chronicle has a DOOM 3 article, talking about upgrading for the game. It offers this list of requirements for the game
- A 1.5-gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500. - 384 megabytes of memory. - Two gigabytes of hard drive space. - An nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card or better; or an ATI Technologies 8500 or better. In other news John Carmack posted a new message in the Xprize.com forums, mostly answering questions about his work at Armadillo Aerospace but also mentioning this (thanks UKGamers)
Id vs Armadillo: I am working on the rendering technology for the next game right now, so it looks like the balance will stay about the same for a while at least.

Is your next project at Id going to be Quake 4? Ive heard rumours about it, just wanted to know if it's true or not. Of course, I understand if you're not allowed to say anything on that subject. Thanks in advance, im a huge fan.
Gah...

Lets put an end to the whole video card question once and for all: GET A 16 PIPELINE CARD.
From the .plan updates, we know the 16 PIPELINE cards are a little faster and will render Doom3 in its all glory. Any lesser of a card will spend more time to render a single frame.
The current cards that can render 16 PIPELINES in one pass are: Nvidia 6800Ultra, Nvidia 6800GT, ATI x800XT PE (in the future, x800GT).
If you *REALLY* want to know which is better looking/faster, wait until the flood of benches hit the net and we'll see what's what.

AMD 2500+ (maybe overclocked)
512MB or 1GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
I think we should be fine even at 1280x1024, don't you? Maybe some quality settings turned on high as well?

First it was Id, then it was ID, now id, and with this latest comment... Id again.
Why must you torment me so?

My conclusions thusfar:
- x800 PRO is faster when AA and AF are enabled
- 6800 GT is faster if you do not enable AA or AF
- x800 PRO is faster at direct x 9 games (Far Cry)
- 6800 GT is faster playing non-dx9 games
- With SM2.0+ enabled (Far Cry 1.2 patch previews) the 6800 GT takes the lead in direct x 9 games (AA and AF disabled)
- With SM2.0+ enabled (Far Cry 1.2 patch previews) + AA and AF both cards perform the same. No clear winner.
- Both companies promise driverimprovements (nVidia through SM2.0+, ATI with a complete rewrite of their OGL driver)
- x800 PRO runs aproximately twice as hot as the 6800 GT
- Image quality is good on both cards. No noticable differences.
Bases on these conclusions, i decided to get the 6800 GT (when it arrives in Europe). Just seems the better allround performer. Plus the SM2.0+ impact on Far Cry promises a lot for the near future.

If he keeps spliting his time with rockets and technology,
we can expect half-baked results from a genius. Doom3 is
going to be solid, great looking tech but I know he is
capable of creating something greater than sky-boxed courtyards
and hallways.
Once BF1942 and Far Cry came along, it really meant
the end of the Carmack Engine Era (tm), I just want him to
sit in a room for 2 years creating a scalable, massively-multiplayer
shooter/RPG engine that can handle 1000's of players per square
inch with zero lag and the server hardware is a P4 on a cable modem.
Can he do it? I don't know, he should try it and let us know :p
Personally, after seeing SP1 and White Knight's test recently,
I think he should bail on the space shit (for now)

great game, all the glory and no expensive upgrades.
i've done the upgrades and haven't been all that impressed with the results when you compare it to the price.
personal opinion.

The coming super realism will just further expose the weakness of game AI. Stop worrying about Carmack; go out and find the Carmack of AI.

640x480, many options on low and around 30fps. Of course, this time, 32bit color shouldn't be a configurable option.

AMD Thunderbird 1.2 Ghz (below requirement)
384 MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (above requirement)
I hope the above and below somewhat cancel out for a good consistent 30 FPS experience... I guess I'll find out in a couple of weeks.

But indoors, inside metal looking rooms, I can hear my PC cry. Same goes for Halo for PC, for the ten minutes I spent playing single player indoors.
Why is it that metal looking walls seem to hurt the most? You'd think outdoor enviorments would be worse? No?
