A brief Q&A with Epic's CliffyB is up at XGR, guess what the questions are about! Cliff is asked about the UT2003 demo delays, changes to the game since E3, his favorite weapon in the game, best feature of the new editor and a few other things.

  • Why do you think UT2003 will be the standard for the “next gen” of FPS’?

Because once you play UT2003 for a while you’ll become addicted to the new features that the game brings to the FPS genre. Suddenly, you’ll want to double jump in your other games. You’ll want to dodge, dodge jump, and wall jump. Ragdoll physics also add a lot. Once you see a body tumble down a staircase or slide down a slope you’ll never be able to go back!

I actually think this is true... I have a feeling I'm going to have a hard time going back to Quake 3 w/o a double jump or jump-dodge. It's something I really love, and sometimes really hate... it's so damn hard to lead people with shots because they're always hopping around all over the place... but I also love being able to dodge too, so I can avoid other peoples' shots :( But I like'em anyway....

And the rag-doll stuff is pretty cool... I was playing Bombing Run last night, and one time I jumped through the scoring ring and saw my corpse fall down to those horizontal bars... and I was tossed around, banging off the various bars... and my corpse actually got stuck on one of the bars! Like, my legs doubled over one side, and my arms/torso over the other! I was surprised to see my dude get stuck hanging there... it was cool.

I wonder how mod-able UT2k3 is... Those rag-doll physics really have a lot of potential for modding... I'd love to make some sort of hand-to-hand combat based UT mod... like with ninjas or something.

Damn, only thing I don't like about Bombing Run though, is how good people are getting! People score so damn quick if you're not on the ball with whats going on... Especially if the teleporter is enabled... they just toss the ball half-way across the map, quickly switch to teleporter, then launch the teleport beacon right where the balls is about to land... then just teleport and pick it up again. :( It's a tough combo to stop if you're chasing someone... the only way to really stop them is to get in front of them... which basically means you have to be on defense near your scoring ring...

Ah well... we'll see. Maybe I am just teh sux.
