Gamers Getting Drafted

The CAL Draft league for Counter-Strike is happening right now with coverage over at ShackES. It's a concept that has been attempted a couple of times before, but this feels like the first time that it might be successful. Over 1,300 people signed up to be drafted to one of 16 different teams. The entire intent being to get some equal distribuation of talent. As a competitor, I love the idea and do hope it's very successful and we perhaps even see LAN tournaments based on these squads. I just thought it was an interesting twist to the Counter-Strike scene. There are hundreds of people on irc as the event happens. Think this will be the hip new trend for the guys who love competition?

why 1300 players??

that's 81.25 per team...

so obviously they aren't going to all get selected...

why not have qualifying tournements or something...

have a huge pool of players and most of them not getting selected just leads to hurt feelings, which means they are less likely to play much in the future...

hopefully CS 1.4 update this week featuring ANTI-CHEATING METHODS will keep the ball rolling.

otherwise, there's no point. a lot of people bailed out of CS due to rampant cheating -- hopefully a revival of the tournament/pro/amateur scene will filter down !

I dunno about this. Seeing the egos people develop when they reach a high level of play, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the players turn into whiny bitches and/or quit if their team isn't kicking ass. :-/

The UT community tried this a while ago, purely as a for fun thing. Assigned dollar values to players and such, gave teams so many "dollars", and let them pick away.

It was great, up until people got too busy to play in the league, since it was just for fun.

Some of the terms of the CPL draft are very, umm, conspicuous though.
