Unreal2 & MP
by Steve Gibson, Mar 16, 2002 12:30pm PSTThere was quite the pissyfit a little while ago when it was announced that Unreal2 would be shipping without multiplayer. Well the UnrealOps guys spotted this post by CliffyB who came out from behind the bushes to give a quick reasoning: (Thanks Mick)
U2's mp was dropped because, frankly, making a truly next generation single player FPS experience is a ton of work and the game needs to ship sometime this century. The team is focusing on a great SP experience. You think the mod community won't figure out all sorts of crazy stuff with the game within days of release? They will. UT2 will fulfill all of your multiplayer needs.Also in case you missed it last night, check out this Unreal naming change stuff. Yearly editions?

I guess the only can make an oustanding multiplayer AND singleplayer game and put it into ONE box in stead of 2.

U2 = single
UC = multi

SP - MP = extremely reduced replay value. After you finish the game, then wtf?

I notice that U2 and UT2 are being used to refer to the two different games.

But 'Unreal Episode II' is crap. I mean, storywise, the first and second Unreal are totally different. It's only the world that remains the same. Plus, Episode II sounds like a name for an add-on pack.

Unreal1 (for me, i hated it's MP and it seemed half assed) was effectivly SP only, and I love it.
The biggest thing I want is co-op support, or I won't be nearly as happy.
on the bright side though, this is a good thing cuz it wont split the unreal community into ut2 players and u2 players.

Does that mean that there will be multiplayer capability in the engine, but they just won't have any content to go with it?
But then again I like mp games as well. But we have tons of mp games out there now. We really don't need a new one for each SP game released.

I guess time will tell (will a multiplayer patch like DE got be enough?) - still kinda looking forward to single play though... so long as it doesn't have any silly stealth/platform puzzles

Unreal (episode) 2 is the single player game
Unreal Tournament 2(003) is the multiplayer game
Its obvious that 99.9% of these posters has no frigging clue what the actuall Mp in unreal2 was. IF folks had been keeping track of unreal2 since its first announcement they would realize that they are wrong.
here is the description of what the Unreal 2 Mp was going to be.. Tell me this would have stunk?
"In addition to the story-driven missions, players will be able to ascend through three single player tournament ladders consisting of multiplayer levels populated with bots. All of these levels are also available for multiplayer action on the Internet or over a LAN. In the new expanded multiplayer game, player teams will fight for control of planet surfaces and alien artifacts using nanotechnology replicators to build ever more sophisticated weapons such as automated gun turrets, force fields, sensors, recon and repair robots, and more. Players will choose one of three player classes at the beginning of play - class selection establishes a balance of speed, special abilities, armor, and firepower. All races, abilities, weapons, equipment, and tactics will have precedents in the single player game - but the expanded multiplayer experience brings everything together at the same time. "
That is straight from the official Unreal 2 site. Unreal tournament 2 is just a port of Unreal Championship spit shined for the Pc. Sorry that doesn't match the originality and the scope of what Unreal 2 Sp And Mp Together would have offered.
Too bad That Epic Saw fit to Rush the release of U2. Truth is.. I would have rather had the game delayed to have a proper mp component released. And They could have released a sp demo to give folks a good idea of what Pc hardware they would need for it.. Allow UT2 to dominate for a while.. and then Release Unreal2 after UT2 had died down.
Without Mp Unreal2 looses that replay factor. And a huge part of the community. Mp meant more sales period.

On another note, no MP in U2 is good thing :P I don't need some half assed multi taking up dev time from what could be a good single player experience. All my favorite FPS single player games are either single player only, or had multi added much later...

that would make my day... :)
(Like we even need another multiplayer online FPS based on the Unreal tech anyway.)
