There are so many games and apps available over on the Google Play Store that it's often hard to distinguish between those that are good and those that are garbage. Fortunately, Google has been putting together various app and game collections for a while, with the goal of each being to showcase the best apps for a given time period. Now that we're nearing the end of the year, the company has seen fit to put together Google Play's Best of 2017, featuring the most popular apps and games released this year.

Among the best new apps of 2017 are Boomerang, TopBuzz Video, Yarn, and FaceApp, the popular photo editing software that allows users to alter photos to add aging and gender reversal effects. On the other side of the spectrum are Google's picks for the best games of 2017, with the likes of CATS: Crash Arena Turbo Stars earning the top spot and runners-up including Magic Tiles 3, Super Mario Run, and Ballz, a favorite of the man with the briefcase.

There are other listings for best of 2017, too, including the top five movies, among which Rogue One: A Star Wars Story stars; the top five books, which features both It by Stephen King and Ready Player One by Ernest Cline; and the top five TV shows, a list that includes Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, and the animated sci-fi series Rick and Morty.

Checking out Google's lists of the best games and apps of the year is simple: simply head over to the Google Play Store or check out this link to see the most popular games of 2017, or click through here to find links for the most popular new apps, top five streamed songs, top five movies, top five TV shows, and top five books of 2017.
