Annapurna Interactive is a publisher with some serious hits under its banner, including the critically-acclaimed narrative adventure game What Remains of Edith Finch, a title that eschews typical video game action in favor of presenting a heartfelt story of love, loss, and death. It's fair to say that Annapurna deals in such atypical experiences, and judging by the company's announcement of upcoming mobile game Florence, that assessment still seems to be holding true.

As revealed in a press release from Annapurna, Florence is the upcoming game being developed by Mountains, the studio led by Ken Wong of Monument Valley fame. Florence follows the story of namesake protagonist Florence Yeoh, a 25-year-old woman who sparks up a romantic relationship with a cello player named Krish.

Within Florence, players will be able to experience the highs and lows of Florence and Krish's relationship through gameplay vignettes that draw inspiration from "slice of life" graphic novels ,various webcomics, and films like 500 Days of Summer. According to Wong, the game is meant to explore some of the finer points of romantic entanglement and the tumultuous emotions inherent.

“With Florence, we wanted to explore through game design what it's like to feel stuck, to fall in love, to miss someone,” Wong said. “We were inspired [...] to tell a story about all the different moments in a relationship, both joyful and painful. Love is such a universal experience, but something we hadn’t seen explored very much in the form of a game.”

While there's no firm release date for Florence just yet, Annapurna Interactive and Mountains hope to release the game for iOS devices sometime next year. In the meantime, take a fresh look at some of Ken Wong's previous work by checking out the trailer for Monument Valley featured below.
