Recently, AMD went live with a livestream presentation in which it announced the next step in the company’s CPU architecture and product innovation. Though the headline news was expected to be the new AMD Ryzen 5000 series of CPUs, AMD kicked off the show with the reveal of its new Zen 3 CPU microarchitecture, which will act as the framework of the Ryzen 5000 and further CPU design at the company.
AMD took a deeper dive into the Zen 3 CPU microarchitecture as part of its Where Gaming Begins livestream presentation on the AMD YouTube channel on October 8, 2020. The Zen 3 microarchitecture is said to be AMD’s major jump to a next-gen level of PC gaming. Further gaming desktop PCs and CPUs will be using the Zen 3 architecture, and it begins with the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, which will be the first AMD chip to utilize what Zen 3 brings to the table. What’s more, we’ll be seeing the new generation in circulation soon with a launch of the Ryzen 5000 series (including the beefier AMD Ryzen 9 5950X) on November 5, 2020.
Some of the more interesting details to come out about the Zen 3 architecture during the presentation were in its specs. The Zen 3 features a 7nm framework with a new core layout and cache topology. It features an 8-core complex that boasts as much as two times the L3 cache accessible per core. With this in mind, the Zen 3 architecture is said to achieve up to a 19% boost of performance over Zen 2-based chips.
Everything we saw was interesting to say the least, but it looks like AMD isn’t nearly done with reveals. They teased the AMD Radeon 6000 Series "Big Navi" GPUs during this presentation and promised a bigger reveal would be coming later, featuring what the new GPUs and CPUs can do in tandem.
