Super Mario Maker 2: Five million courses uploaded

Published , by Ozzie Mejia

One month ago today, Nintendo announced that Super Mario Maker 2 had hit a major milestone of two million courses uploaded. In the four weeks since, that number has gone up by more than double. Nintendo ended its work week by announcing that over five million custom courses have been uploaded to Super Mario Maker 2.

Super Mario Maker 2 released on Nintendo Switch exactly six weeks ago today, meaning the user base is uploading levels at a torrid average pace of over one million per week. To put this in perspective, this game is already over halfway to the 7.2 million user-created courses number that the original Super Mario Maker on Wii U put up nearly nine months after its original launch. And as we noted after Super Mario Maker 2 hit the 2 million level mark, the closest comparable competitor was the original LittleBigPlanet, which needed nine months to even reach one million courses uploaded.

This speaks to the Nintendo Switch's much larger install base, along with the multitude of additoinal options that level creators have. There have been standard solo stages, as well stages designed specifically for two-player co-op and also four-player competitive play. Creative juices have flowed freely over the past six weeks, as evidenced by some of the video floating around on YouTube from such personalities as GrandPOOBear, CarlSagan42, and Cliffy.

Of course, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention that the Shacknews community has also contributed to this giant number. It's more than just the Chatty community, too. The Shacknews staff has also offered up some stages of our own, including our own Man with the Briefcase, Asif Khan, who is currently working through creator's block to build his next monstrosity. We've also worked to spotlight some of our favorite stages from the game's first few weeks.

Can Super Mario Maker 2 break the 10 million mark by the end of 2019? It's certainly on the table, so stay tuned. Super Mario Maker 2 is available now on Nintendo Switch. For more information, be sure to check out our full guide and wiki.
