DreamRift co-founder: publisher piracy fears lead to unambitious games

Is a pirated game truly a lost sale? Do some people buy games after playing a pirate copy? In a way, it doesn't really matter. The mere belief amongst some publishers that hardcore gamers are frightful pirates is why the DS and 3DS are given over to safe bets like licensed games and sequels, according to Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion developer DreamRift's co-founder Peter Ong.

New game releases of January 7-13

Bayonetta creator Platinum's multiplayer fighter Anarchy Reigns is the star of next week's new release list, which is otherwise pretty thin. We'll see tower defense Fieldrunners 2 and spaceship shooter Dawnstar both hit PC, Earth Defense Force 2017 invades Vita, and, well, not much else is coming.

New game releases of December 24-30

For some reason or another, not one single new game is landing on store shelves next Tuesday. In fact, new releases are light all round next week. Puzzling! We'll receive a smattering of downloadable DS and 3DS games and... that's it.

New game releases of December 17-23

Only two new games are physically landing on store shelves next week, but virtual shelves will groan under the strain of new digital releases. We'll be getting Street Fighter X Mega Man, Knytt Underground, Double Fine's Kinect Party, Zombie Driver HD, and loads more.

New game releases of December 10-16

Next week's another quiet one for new releases as we head into the holidays, but a few items of interest are coming out. We'll see sandbox build-o-FPS Ace of Spades, Darkfall: Unholy Wars, Grasshopper's Black Knight Sword, Big Sky Infinity, Tale of Tales' latest, and a few more.

New game releases of December 3-9

Far Cry 3 arrives Stateside next week, having curiously already debuted in Europe, but things are quite quiet release-wise aside from Ubisoft's open-world murder simulator. We'll see DJMax Technika Tune, Guardians of Middle Earth, Primordia, and the small and unexciting second wave of Wii U releases, and a few more odds and ends.

New game releases of November 26-December 2

The pre-holidays rush of new releases is slowing to a trickle, but it's still pretty juicy. This week will bring Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition, the PC edition of Super Hexagon, Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault, some classic Sega fighting games, and a few more.

New game releases of November 19-25

We're almost through the roster of pre-holiday big-hitters, but next week will be another good'un for new releases. We'll see Hitman: Absolution, Persona 4 Golden, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, PlanetSide 2, the PC editions of Scribblenauts Unlimited and Assassin's Creed III, and more.

New game releases of November 12-18

What kind of a maniac game would try to launch in the same week as a brand new console, thinking it had any chance of being noticed? Well, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is having a go. Yes, next week is rather quiet aside from the stomping great games monsters that are Cod Blops 2 and Nintendo's shiny Wii U.

New game releases of November 5-11

Lawks, will you look at that! This week brings that most rare and precious of new releases: a new PlayStation 2 game, in the form of PES 2013. Oh, and something named Halo 4 is coming out. It's probably popular if there are at least four, unless this is comedy The Naked Gun-style naming.
