The Who: Rock Band Coming Next Year?

Oct 27, 2009 4:10pm CST tags: The Beatles: Rock Band, Harmonix, Rock Band, Rock Band 2, The Who: Rock Band
The plan for a new band-specific Rock Band game may have been spoiled by The Who lead singer Roger Daltrey, who stated in a new interview that the legendary group is getting the Harmonix treatment next year.

"They're going to be doing a Who one next year," said Daltrey to Masslive, in giving his thoughts on this year's The Beatles: Rock Band.

"There is one planned," he added. "[The idea] is fabulous."

While the default assumption is that the aged rocker was referring to DLC, The Who has already been featured as Rock Band DLC several times. Harmonix has said nothing, of course.

It looks like next week will be a costly one for some Rock Band owners, as developer Harmonix is slated to unleash some rather anticipated downloadable add-ons.

Meanwhile, owners of The Beatles: Rock Band will be able to expand their song libraries with the remaining tracks from "Abbey Road," including the 16-minute B-side medley. Songs will be available individually at $2 / 160 MS Points / 200 Wii Points or collectively through a $17 /1360 MS Point bundle, with more albums on the way.

Expect both sets of downloadable content to hit Xbox 360 and Wii on Tuesday, October 20, with PlayStation 3 availability coming Thursday, October 22. Should you desire a full list of the various tunes soon to be on offer, look no further... Read more

Rock Band Beatles Sales Top Expectations, But Not Guitar Hero

Sep 17, 2009 10:02pm CST tags: The Beatles: Rock Band
Sales of The Beatles: Rock Band are exceeding company expectations, but early indicators show Guitar Hero 5 beating the game in overall retail competition.

"Sales have exceeded our internal projections and we've sold 25 per cent of our inventory in the first week," said Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman at New York's Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference, according to Gamasutra.

Meanwhile, Guitar Hero division head Dan Rosensweig claims that Activision's Guitar Hero 5 is currently outselling The Beatles four-to-one in US retail stores. The UK weekly sales chart shows that Guitar Hero 5 captured first place in its debut, with The Beatles only reaching the fourth slot on the chart.

"[The Beatles: Rock Band] did not affect our sales," said Rosensweig to the Financial Times.

Thoughts on The Beatles: Rock Band

Sep 08, 2009 8:30pm CST tags: The Beatles: Rock Band
I've never been what you'd call a "Beatles Fan." My parents didn't play the White Album on summer trips. I never had a friend that pushed Sgt. Pepper's into my hands. I didn't own a bird named Ringo, and I never had a snake named Yoko. I've gone through life oblivious of the intricacies of the thing, nodding my head knowingly as people spoke reverently of the group. "Oh yes, The Beatles. That was a good one."
So it was odd to find myself anticipating The Beatles: Rock Band with the kind of frothy fervor I'd normally reserve for a space strategy game. The one aspect of the music genre that continues to excite me is the prospect of discovering new bands by way of my need to justify the expense of my plastic instruments. Purchasing $10 albums seems excessive, but put that same music in a $60 game, and now I have a great excuse to make use of my $300 drums. Video games.

In that respect, it's a disservice to say that only Beatles fans should investigate The Beatles: Rock Band. As someone that missed out on Beatlemania, the game not only works as a collection of Beatles Rock Band songs, but also as a brief education in the chronology and evolution of the band's music. It's also really fun.... Read more

The Beatles: Rock Band Getting 'Sgt. Pepper,' 'Rubber Soul' as Downloadable Albums

Aug 12, 2009 1:02pm CST tags: The Beatles: Rock Band
Buried in a massive nine page New York Times article on The Beatles: Rock Band was the news that two more full albums are set to be released as downloadable content for the game.
The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "Rubber Soul" will join the already-announced "Abbey Road" as downloadable albums following the game's release, according to the article.

Also hidden in the article? This hilarious tidbit: "The Rock Band Network is so potentially consequential that Harmonix went to great lengths to keep its development secret, including giving it the unofficial in-house code name Rock Band: Nickelback, on the theory that the name of the quintessentially generic modern rock group would be enough to deflect all curiosity."
