Ubisoft Explains Splinter Cell, Red Steel Delays

Jul 28, 2009 10:46am CST tags: Splinter Cell: Conviction, Delay, Red Steel 2, Ubisoft
With Splinter: Cell Conviction and Red Steel 2 pushed out of the crowded holiday season--both now due between January 1 and March 31, 2010--Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has explained that the delays stemmed from quality concerns.

"Red Steel and Splinter Cell are going to greatly benefit from the additional polishing time," he said in a conference call, as reported by Joystiq. "It's just a question of polish...[the teams] asked for more time to be able to come with a better product, for both of those games. The quality of the games is there for what you've been able to see at E3, but we were not able to have that same quality on the full game."

The CEO added that while the two games "will not do as many units for the first month as they would have done in November/December," with an estimated one million sales lost due to the delay, the enhanced "level of quality" should help sell more units long-term.

The growing pains of Splinter Cell: Conviction continue, as Ubisoft has once again postponed the oft-delayed stealth-action game alongside several other titles.

Both Splinter Cell: Conviction (PC, Xbox 360) and Red Steel 2 (Wii) have been bumped out of 2009, and are now expected to release between January 1 and March 31, 2010. Conviction was originally due in Q4 2007, with at least four delays now under its belt.

Also delayed were the new Ghost Recon and I Am Alive. Once due between January and March 2010, both are now expected between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011.

"We are disappointed that we have to postpone the release of several major games but we consider that this choice is the best one in the long-term interests of Ubisoft," CEO Yves Guillemot explained in a statement.

Ubisoft's 'Ghost Recon 4' Coming by Early 2010; Splinter Cell: Conviction, Red Steel 2 by Christmas

Apr 29, 2009 1:52pm CST tags: Splinter Cell: Conviction, Ghost Recon 4, Ubisoft, Red Faction 2
Financial documents released by Ubisoft today confirmed that a fourth entry in the Ghost Recon series of squad-based shooters will soon be released by the publisher.

Splinter Cell: Conviction
No details on "Ghost Recon 4" were mentioned in the documents, though the game was scheduled to be released in Ubisoft's 2009-2010 fiscal period. This puts the title out by the end of March 2010 at the latest.

Meanwhile, the oft-delayed Splinter Cell: Conviction (PC, 360) was mentioned in a list of games coming "this Christmas," along with the western-themed, Wii MotionPlus-supporting Red Steel 2 (Wii).

Assassin's Creed 2, Splinter Cell Due in Next Year; Ubisoft Delays I Am Alive

Ubisoft today revealed that Assassin's Creed 2, Splinter Cell Conviction and a new Ghost Recon game, among others, will be released across its next fiscal year, which spans April 1, 2009 through March 31, 2010.

Though the company only yesterday said that Darkworks' first-person survival game I Am Alive would arrive in March, the game has been delayed, with Ubisoft noting that it "will require further development time and will now bolster the line-up for 2009-10."

Overall, 2009-10 will see Ubisoft deliver 7 titles in existing game franchises, launch 3 new brands (including I Am Alive), release 4 license-based tie-ins (including James Cameron's Avatar and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and provide additional entries in the Petz, Imagine, My Coach and PlayZone casual game series.

Splinter Cell: Conviction Officially Delayed

Jul 24, 2008 11:42am CST tags: Splinter Cell: Conviction, Delay
Ubisoft Montreal's next Splinter Cell title, initially announced as Splinter Cell: Conviction, has been delayed until Ubisoft's 2009-2010 fiscal year, the publisher confirmed today.

The stealth-action PC and Xbox 360 game is now expected to arrive between April 1, 2009 and March 30, 2010, instead of the previous estimated release between January 1 and March 30, 2009. Curiously, Ubisoft only referred to the game as Splinter Cell in the announcement, suggesting the Conviction subtitle may have been dropped.

No reason was provided for the latest postponement of the thrice-delayed title, which was originally slated to arrive in holiday 2007. Ubisoft noted that the push would help "bolster the line-up for fiscal 2009-10," though rumors have suggested the title was recently forced "back to the drawing board."

Rumor: Splinter Cell: Conviction Delayed Again, Reworked Because of Assassin's Creed

May 20, 2008 9:59am CST tags: Splinter Cell: Conviction, Delay, Assassins Creed
An unconfirmed report by Xbox World 360 magazine claims that Ubisoft's twice-delayed stealth-centric title Splinter Cell: Conviction has been postponed yet again, with this delay going so far as to push the Xbox 360-exclusive game "back to the drawing board."

As relayed by CVG, the magazine states that the game and its pedestrian-filled environments are now expected for a holiday 2009 or spring 2010 release.

Ubisoft had previously expected a release between April 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009, with a Microsoft GDC presentation in February listing Splinter Cell: Conviction among the exclusive Xbox 360 titles due out this fall

The magazine speculates that the delay stems from the game not comparing favorably to other internally-developed titles, such as Ubisoft Montreal's Assassin's Creed.

When reached for comment by videogaming247, Ubisoft did not deny the allegations, but instead claimed it had "no official comment on this story, which is based on a purely speculative news piece."
