The debut trailer for Disney's game-inspired Prince of Persia film has arrived, offering a glimpse of the Jake Gyllenhaal's antics as the titular (and time-traveling) prince.

Partially written by franchise creator Jordan Mechner, directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean), the film rolls out to theaters in late May. A higher quality version of the trailer is expected tomorrow--for now, you'll have to make due with this blocky YouTube embed.

Update: As expected, a much higher quality version of the trailer is now available.

New Prince of Persia Title Trademarked

Oct 07, 2009 1:32pm CST tags: Prince of Persia
Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner has filed a new gaming-related trademark for "Prince of Persia The Forgotten Sands."

The filing was noticed by Superannuation, which also took note of an Ubisoft character modeler that recently listed his current job as "working on the new Prince of Persia."

Mechner has not dabbled in video games since 2003's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. More recently, Mechner penned the screenplay for the movie adaptation of Sands, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal and is set for release in May 2010.

Due to the upcoming film--and the shared word of "Sands" in the titles--many internet sleuths are speculating that the new Prince of Persia game will be tied to the movie in some way. Niether Ubisoft or Mechner have officially commented on the purported project.

Mass Effect: Redemption by Dark Horse Comics will bridge the game between the first game and sequel Mass Effect 2, authored by ME2 script writer Mac Walters and drawn by Star Wars Legacy artist Omar Francia. The first issue will arrive on January 6 2010.

Raven Software's Singularity is to receive a graphic novel exploring the mysterious Cold War experiments which gave rise to the the shooter's time-shifting shenanigans. Coming from Twistory Studios and Image Publishing, it's due following Singularity's release--recently delayed until March 2010 to avoid competing with Modern Warfare 2.

Lastly, Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner is penning six new stories for a 128-page graphic novel which paves the way for Disney's upcoming movie Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. That puts the PC version of the acrobatic open-world platformer at $24.99 in the US.

Upon its release last fall, the game garnered mixed reactions. Some praised the title for its distinct look and smooth gameplay, while others complained it was too easy and marred by repetitive boss fights. The Epilogue downloadable content was meant to alleviate some of those issues, though the content will not be released on PC.

The impending "Epilogue" downloadable level pack for Ubisoft Montreal's Prince of Persia will not heading to the PC, according to an Ubisoft representative.

"Unfortunately for business reasons we won't be seeing any PoP DLC appear [on the PC]," said Ubisoft community manager Chris "UbiRazz" Easton in a post found by BigDownload on the game's official forum.

"Sorry guys!" added Easton. Of course, "sorry" wasn't enough for PC fans of the game, who have already begun organizing a letter-writing campaign.

Prince of Persia Producer Dismayed by Lack of 'Pats on the Back,' Wonders If Gamers Want Innovation

Dec 23, 2008 4:42pm CST tags: Prince of Persia
A lack of appreciation for the numerous "risks" developer Ubisoft Montreal took with the recently released Prince of Persia (PC, PS3, 360) has left producer Ben Mattes wondering if gamers really want innovation, or if the studio fell short of its lofty goals.

"We set out to keep a few core fundamentals but to re-imagine everything else, discarding some very well entrenched ideas not only about the brand but also about video games in general," Mattes explained to IGN.

"What surprises me is how little these high level risks seem to be noticed and appreciated as attempts to shake up the industry and push things forward," he noted. "Perhaps I'm an idealist, but I think I was expecting a few more virtual pats-on-the-back for our attempts to do something new."

Prince of Persia was praised by critics for its distinctive graphics and dialog system, which lets gamers control when characters talk and for how long, but chastised for a lack of difficulty, as the open-world platformer does not allow players to die... Read more

Prince of Persia Retail Copies DRM-free, Says Ubisoft

Dec 11, 2008 3:55pm CST tags: Prince of Persia
The retail PC version of Ubisoft's Prince of Persia, released to stores this week, is entirely devoid of any DRM or copy-protection code according to Ubisoft community manager Chris "UbiRazz" Easton.

"A lot of people complain that DRM is what forces people to pirate games but as PoP PC has no DRM we'll see how truthful people actually are," said Easton in a post on the Ubisoft forums. "Not very, I imagine."

Easton later clarified that only the retail copies will be devoid of DRM: "I was purely talking about store-bought copies of PoP which have no copy protection."

Ubisoft faced two significant DRM-related backlashes this year. The PC port of Assassin's Creed was widely criticized for its DRM that apparently "phoned home," with some claiming that the copy-protection software was behind performance issues. In July, a patch that rendered the PC version of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 unusable saw Ubisoft releasing a no-CD crack, produced by a warez group, as an official fix.

Ubisoft today released the full list of achievements for the upcoming Prince of Persia reboot, which you can take a look at here.

The company also put out this Bravo/VH1-esque promotional trailer, which features pretty girls talking about how this guy reminds them of ex-boyfriends. I think it has something to do with the whole "leading you around by the nose, exploiting your special powers, then running away" thing.

Assassin's Creed Invades Prince of Persia

Nov 21, 2008 9:36am CST tags: Prince of Persia, Screenshots, Assassins Creed, Gone Gold
Teasing that "there are many secrets hiding," publisher Ubisoft today revealed that Prince of Persia will sport several unlockable outfits, also noting that the cartoony platforming game has gone gold and entered the manufacturing process.

Giving the Prince the appearance of the Assassin's Creed lead, the Altair skin can be earned by linking a PlayStation Network or Xbox Live account with an Ubisoft.com account, which can be created at PrinceofPersia.com.

It's the second time Altair has appeared in a non-Assassin's Creed game, the first being an unlockable skin in Kojima Production's Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3).

Those that pre-order the title from GameStop will receive a free code to unlock the Sands of Time skin, mirroring the Prince's look from the previous trilogy, reports IGN.

Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, Prince of Persia hits PS3 and Xbox 360 on December 2, with a PC release due December 9. The studio is also at work on an Assassin's Creed sequel, though no timeline has been offered as to its release.

Prince of Persia to Get DLC 'Of Significant Value'

Nov 17, 2008 3:13pm CST tags: Prince of Persia, DLC
Ubisoft Montreal's Prince of Persia (PC, 360, PS3) is planned to receive additional content after its December release, and producer Ben Mattes promised that the content will be worth users' hard-earned money.

"We certainly have plans for downloadable content," confirmed Mattes in a video interview for French site Gamersyde, which was cleverly spotted by Eurogamer.

"The intention is to do downloadable content that adds significant value, so I don't think you'll see downloadable content of a new skin or a new weapon or something like that," he added.

Mattes elaborated to describe what shape the DLC could take. "[Maybe] it's going to be a new story, a new experience, maybe a prequel, maybe a sequel--we're going to do something that really offers a lot of value for the player," he explained.

Sporting colorful new visuals to complement the series' wall-running, leaping and bounding, Prince of Persia lands for consoles on December 2 followed by the PC release on December 9. The promised DLC will arrive "sometime next year."
