Assassin's Creed 2 Video: Six Minutes of Footage

To mark the conclusion of PAX 09, Ubisoft has issued a six-and-a-half-minute video walkthrough of Assassin's Creed II that summarizes what was on display at the show.

The open-world murder simulator sequel, once again crafted by Ubisoft Montreal, arrives on PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and now iPhone come November 17, 2009.

Left 4 Dead 2: The PAX Interview, or How You Made Valve's Chet Faliszek Cry

Along with many Shackers, the staff here has been hoping for a theme park campaign for some time. In fact, we even asked Valve writer Chet Faliszek about it at E3.

"Are you guys taking pictures from our office or something?" he said in response, laughing. "Um... there's some stuff we'll be talking about later."

Fast forward to PAX, and we've got our hands on a theme park campaign in Left 4 Dead 2, the wonderfully off-beat Dark Carnival. Surprise!

Fresh from PAX, this new batch of shots from Dragon Age starts bloody and ends booby. There are a few pictures of people standing around inbetween--presumably depicting the founding of a nation, or some other boring thing.
Dragon Age hits the PC and Xbox 360 on November 3. The PS3 release will follow later on an unspecified date.

'Splosion Man Developer Announces 'Comic Jumper'

Twisted Pixel, developer of 'Splosion Man, has announced its next game Comic Jumper, touted as offering as "A new style of gameplay" with not only jumping but shooting too.

An announcement trailer explains Comic Jumper will shift visual styles as doofus hero Captain Smiley enters different comic books to "alter their story lines," with looks shown including Powerpuff Girls, Frank Miller's Sin City, and the mega muscles of Rob Liefeld.

Neither a release date nor platforms were given, though 'Splosion Man and The Maw both hit Xbox Live Arcade, and The Maw received a PC release too.

Left 4 Dead 2's Preorder-only Weapon Explained

Tucked in a press release announcing Left 4 Dead 2's arrival at the Penny Arcade Expo was the news that Valve would be offering an exclusive melee weapon to those that pre-order the zombie shooter sequel from "select retailers."
The weapon is an American baseball bat, and has its own unique characteristics--in other words, it's not just a re-skinned version of the cricket bat, Valve told us today.

However, if you're playing the wait-and-see game with Left 4 Dead 2, you'll still have a chance to use the bat post-release depending on your server makeup.... Read more

Monkey Island Creator Ron Gilbert on Today's Games Industry, Art and the 'Freedom to Fail'

Ron Gilbert, creator of Monkey Island and developer of DeathSpank, today delivered a keynote at the Penny Arcade Expo. The speech covered his journey to become a game developer, then took a sharp turn to Gilbert's take on the industry today.

Gilbert's upcoming action-RPG DeathSpank, due "2010ish."
"The games industry [has become] just that.. an industry," said Gilbert, a slide behind him showing a set of smokestacks.

After stating that the first Monkey Island was developed by seven people for $135,000, Gilbert decried the corporate mentality behind modern big-budget development, saying: "Big companies need to be safe. This is why indie games excite me."

Left 4 Dead 2 Screenshots Star Zombie Clown, Pre-orders Get Exclusive Weapon

With PAX 09 in full swing, Valve has issued new screenshots and artwork from Left 4 Dead 2, showing off more of the zombie shooter sequel's "Dark Carnival" campaign.

Also provided was our first look at the new "Jockey" Boss monster, with Valve explaining that it "lets you attack lone Survivors and wrestle control of their movement away from them-into fire, off ledges, or straight into the middle of a zombie horde."

Packing "20-plus new items" (including an electric guitar and machete) and five new campaigns, Left 4 Dead 2 hits PC and Xbox 360 on November 17.

In keeping with recent retail trends, Valve noted that one particular item, "the American baseball bat," will only be offered as a "pre-sell exclusive with select retailers."

Fort Zombie Makes Internet's Dreams Come True

Sword of the Stars developer Kerberos Productions today announced a game certain to make the vast swathes of the Internet break down and weep tears of joy--Fort Zombie.

Set in the randomised fictional town of Piety, Indiana, during the zombie apocalypse, Fort Zombie will see players fortifying a school, prison or police station and scavenging for food, fuel and ammunition by day, defending against the undead hordes at night.

Rescuing NPC survivor families from the town's assorted stores, restaurants, gas stations and homes will bring new skills to your fort, though certain special zombies will remember skills of their own from their former existence to use against you.

Published by Paradox, Fort Zombie is slated to arrive on PC this fall at a mere $14.99.

Diablo, Mythos Vets' Action RPG 'Torchlight' Gets Trailer, Release Date

Runic Games, formed from the team behind Flagship Studios' Mythos when the developer closed shop, has today announced that its PC singleplayer dungeon crawler Torchlight will be released for download on October 27 priced at $19.99.

A Diablo-style action RPG--trawling randomly-generated dungeons, bashing hordes of monsters for randomised loot--Torchlight also boasts pets, fishing and a level editor.

The Runic team includes such notable figures as Blizzard North co-founders Max and Erich Schaefer, Fate creator Travis Baldree, and Diablo series composer Matt Uelmen.

Penny Arcade Xbox Live Avatar Shirts Celebrate PAX

To mark tomorrow's opening of the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle, Microsoft has released a number of Penny Arcade-themed shirts as Xbox Live avatar clothing.

The organizers of the 2009 Penny Arcade Expo announced the official exhibitor lineup today.

Headlining the list is BioWare's MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, which will be demonstrated live in public for the first time. Also in attendance is Ubisoft, with Assassins' Creed II and Splinter Cell Conviction.

The stormtrooopers will be real at PAX.

The organizers of the Penny Arcade Expo today named the PAX 10, a collection of independent games to be showcased at the upcoming event.

Chosen from 150 candidates, the final selection represents a diverse group of titles, ranging from the excellent iPhone tower defense Fieldrunners, to the minimalist, physics-based Osmos.

Of course, the best part of any indie games showcase is that many of the titles have already been released, with several available free of charge.

Penny Arcade Expo 2009 Detailed

The first confirmed exhibitors for this year's Penny Arcade Expo, the ultimate nerd slumber-party, have been announced by event organizers Jerry "Tycho" Holkins and Mike "Gabe" Krahulik.

Attendees will include The Behemoth, Bethesda, Bioware, Blizzard, Capcom, CCP Games, EA, Foundation 9, Microsoft, Mythic, Nintendo, NC Soft, Rockstar, Telltale, Turbine, Ubisoft, Upper Deck, Valve, and WB Games.

The organizers have also already lined up several musical acts: Anamanaguchi, Freezepop, JoCo and MC Frontalot, Metroid Metal and Paul & Storm are all set to entertain.

PAX 09 will begin September 4 in Seattle, Washington. Registration has already opened on the official PAX site.
