Ninja Reflex First Impressions

Minigame-laden party games quickly became a staple of the Wii's library--what FPS games have traditionally been for the PC, and what platformers once were for consoles. Developer Sanzaru is pitching gamers another Wii minigame collection with Ninja Reflex, but hoping that its offering will distinguish itself by blending more hardcore attitudes into the mix. I was able to get hands-on time with the game (and kick the asses of numerous other publications) last night.
The thing that makes Ninja Reflex unique among other games of its segment is how much everything boils down to timing and reflex, down to the millisecond. I tied with another player in the final round of the EA-run tournament--but ended up the runner-up by a mere 27 milliseconds.

This makes the game considerably more competitive than most of its counterparts. Rather than flailing wildly as fast as you can, or simply being the most generally accurate, you have to be clearly and empirically superior to your competitors in order to win. Read more...

First Ninja Reflex Details, Screens

Dec 05, 2007 10:20am CST tags: Activision, Electronic Arts, Ninja Reflex
Electronic Arts has offered up the first details and screenshots of Ninja Reflex, the ninja-centric Wii and DS party game it mentioned in passing last week.

The project is being handled by developer Sanzaru Games and is due out on Wii and DS in March 2008. It will be co-published by Nunchuck Games and EA Partners.

Ninja Reflex is its first announced game from Sanzaru, which was formed by seven ex-Activision employees, including Tin Guerrero and Glen Egan.

"Ninja Reflex channels the accessible multiplayer fun of Wii Sports and the self-improvement aspect of Brain Age into a martial arts universe that is ideally suited for the Wii and Nintendo DS," said Nunchuck CEO and president David Luntz.

Fans of pop culture phenomena will be pleased to learn of a ninja-themed party game coming from EA next year to Wii and DS. Arriving from an unnamed studio, Ninja Reflex will retail sometime in 2008, the publisher announced.

The title is the second ninja-including party game slated for 2008 release, as Blazing Lizard's Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball (X360) will be available for download from Xbox Live Arcade next year as well.

Another ninja-focused game for DS, Ninjatown, is based on a line of plush toys and will be arriving next year from Venan Entertainment and Cashmere Productions. EA said it will release more information on Ninja Reflex next week.
