Guitar Hero Smash Hits Arrives June 16

Apr 10, 2009 4:05pm CST tags: Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits, Guitar Hero Smash Hits, Trailer
At first, this trailer for Guitar Hero Smash Hits doesn't seem to offer anything new. We already know about all the songs it mentions, we know it was renamed from Greatest Hits to Smash Hits, and series veterans have a good idea of what it looks like.

But then, at the very last moment, the video redeems itself with word that the compilation of 48 past Guitar Hero tunes, now updated with master track recordings and full band play, will arrive on PS2, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii come June 16, 2009. Nice job, trailer.

Guitar Hero Greatest Hits Renamed

Apr 03, 2009 6:30pm CST tags: Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits
Following what was likely a lengthy deliberation between powerhouse executives, no doubt held in a secret location and punctuated by intense shouting matches over brandy and smokes, the name of Guitar Hero Greatest Hits has been changed to Guitar Hero Smash Hits.

Smash Hits will still feature 48 master tracks from previous Guitar Hero games when it's released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 and Wii this June.

While the name change is sadly official, I'll always personally refer to the game as Guitar Hero 2: Sea of Dreams.

Three New Guitar Hero Games Coming This Year, Activision Planning 'Major Re-stage' of Franchise

During a conference call today, Activision confirmed three new Guitar Hero games, including a greatest hits compilation, a new DS game, and a "major restage."

Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits will appear on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii, bringing full-band versions of major songs that have appeared in past guitar-only iterations. Greatest Hits marks the first major Guitar Hero title to not appear on the PlayStation 2.

Update: Activision has since announced Greatest Hits for the PlayStation 2.

Both Greatest Hits and the new Nintendo DS game will arrive over the summer. That Nintendo DS game is likely to be Guitar Hero: Modern Hits, which has been previously revealed via trademarks and listings but never officially confirmed.

In addition, Activision Publishing president Mike Griffin revealed that the company is planning a "major re-stage" of the franchise with "all new differentiated Guitar Hero products" in the second half of the year, presumably in the fall holiday season.

The three Guitar Hero games join Guitar Hero: Metallica, which hits PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on March 29, followed by PlayStation 2 and Wii editions later on. Activision is also planning to debut the spin-off DJ Hero franchise at some point in 2009.
