Following a brief delay, CD Projekt today announced that its digital distribution platform focused on classic PC titles will enter into public beta next Monday, Sept. 8.

On that day, anyone who applied for beta access at GOG.com on or before September 7 will be able to purchase and download DRM-free copies of "about 30 acclaimed title from Interplay and Codemasters," with more to be added each week.

The games will be priced at either $5.99 or $9.99, with the first purchase rewarded with a code for a free Interplay-published title. A list of the launch titles was not provided, though Fallout, Fallout 2, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Descent 1-3 and Kingpin: Life of Crime are expected to be among those available at launch or shortly thereafter.

"It's a beta that works just like the final site will," noted managing director Adam Oldakowski. "All users will be able to join the community, add comments, write reviews and download additional materials for the games they bought."

Once slated to launch for a select few on August 1, the closed beta of Good Old Games--CD Projekt's DRM-free digital distribution platform focused on classic PC titles--has undergone a few changes, including a brief delay.

Instead of providing access to a select few, the beta will soon be accessible to anyone who applied, with GOG.com still accepting applications. However, beta participants may not receive a free game, as was once planned.

"We had a huge response to the site announcement and so we've had to rethink our beta plans a bit," marketing VP Tom Ohle told Shacknews. "We're not sure if we're going to be able to offer everyone in the beta a free game, but we do want to... Read more

Priced at either $5.99 or $9.99, these aren't straight re-releases. CD Projekt has done work to ensure that each game is now compatible with Windows XP and Vista, going so far as to create a custom installer for each game. The company is even planning to remove DRM from titles that featured copy protection upon their initial release.

But how does it actually work? How far back will GOG's offerings go, and what's stopping them from offering modern games as well?... Read more

"Our main goal is to try and deliver the best games of all time for PC," marketing VP Tom Ohle explained to Shacknews during an in-depth interview.

The site will initially carry titles from publishers Interplay and Codemasters, including the previously-mentioned Fallout series, MDK 1 and 2, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Freespace 1 and 2, Sacrifice, Descent 1-3 and Kingpin: Life of Crime.
