EA Considering Wii Fitness Game

May 08, 2008 3:19pm CST tags: Electronic Arts, Wii Fit
Publisher Electronic Arts is looking into the development of a Wii fitness game, Eurogamer reports.

Speaking at an event, EA Sports president Peter Moore remarked on the opportunities created by Nintendo's Wii Fit, already launched overseas and aimed for release in North America on May 19.

"We're watching very closely what the Wii Fit board does," Moore said. "We think we have to have a role to play with that mum—the kids have gone to school, she's got 45 minutes on her own, the Wii is there, it's the first console she's ever liked because she can do things herself. And we're working on stuff, trying to work out how we can use EA Sports applications there."

But Moore noted that if EA were to create a Wii fitness title, the exercise activities offered therein would be tailored for Western audiences and geared towards more active workouts than Nintendo's Wii Fit.

"I don't think the [Wii Balance Board] is going to take a pounding," he added. "We need to look more at western fitness in which I can actually be moving and start to sweat a little bit, and that's what we're working on right now."

Apr 30, 2008 5:15pm CST tags: Electronic Arts
Publisher Electronic Arts has announced that it will be shutting down its non-linear online playplace EA-Land (PC) of August 1.

Initially known as The Sims Online and launched in late 2002, the Maxis-developed title was rebranded with a new name, new servers, and new features earlier this year.

"The lifetime of the game has drawn to an end, and now we will be focusing on new ideas and other innovative concepts in the games arena," reads a post on the company's blog.

"We'd like to thank everyone who has taken part in this online community as a unique experience in the virtual world."

EA Reveals Online RTS/TCG BattleForge

Apr 29, 2008 9:42am CST tags: BattleForge, Electronic Arts
Publisher Electronic Arts today announced BattleForge, an online PC real-time strategy game that has players assembling their forces through virtual trading cards.

Developed by SpellForce and Siedler creator EA Phemonic, the fantasy-based game is slated to arrive this fall. As with other online trading card titles, players will be able to win and trade cards, as well as buy new cards through micro-transactions.

The company was quick to point out that the retail release of BattleForge will include the "complete game," and that microtransactions will not be required to play the game.

"BattleForge is the next step in compelling RTS gameplay by taking the battles completely online," boasted executive producer Richard Leinfellner.

"With co-op play, challenging tournaments, Guilds, chat rooms and a robust marketplace for trading and buying your cards," he continued, "BattleForge is the first RTS to add integral social and community components to an exciting fantasy RTS."

EA Creative Chief William 'Bing' Gordon Departs

Apr 28, 2008 5:35pm CST tags: Electronic Arts
William Electronic Arts chief creative officer William "Bing" Gordon (pictured left) will leave the company to work at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers this coming June.

Gordon's departure ends a 25-year run at the company, which he co-founded in 1982. He will join the Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers firm as a partner, lending his expertise to entrepreneurs in consumer technologies.

"I've known the leading partners at Kleiner since John Doerr and Brook Byers made a founding investment in Electronic Arts in '82," Gordon told Newsweek. "Then Brook went on the board...[he] deeply believes in entertainment and entrepreneurial possibilities. So he shaped my thinking about what a board member can be."

Gordon added the firm's commitment to fresh ideas in the digital realm as impetus for signing on with Kleiner. "[They] find entrepreneurs and ideas in all things digital. There's three companies they've invested in with people I used to work with, none of whom are doing games. They're all doing other things in digital media that are wildly cool."

"My personal tastes have changed," Gordon added. "So if I can have dinner with John Doerr and Al Gore versus some people trying to make the next console game, I'm finding their grown-up, global thinking just more fun. As much as anything else, after 25 years at EA, I'm ready to be a forty-year old."

Monopoly Hits PS2, X360, Wii This Fall

Apr 23, 2008 9:30am CST tags: Monopoly, Electronic Arts, Screenshots
Electronic Arts Casual Enetrainment has unveiled more details on the upcoming Monopoly game, which it first mentioned back in February.

Based on the well-known Hasbro board game of the same name and supporting up to four players, Monopoly is slated to hit PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and Wii this fall alongside the debut of Hasbro's Monopoly Here & Now: The World Edition board game.

According to EA, the electric version of the game that seems to never end will pack faster gameplay that "eliminates downtime" and multiple game boards. The company also teased that the title will feature a "party twist," likely referring to the inclusion of mini-games such as escaping jail.

The odd phrasing of the announcement, which specified that the title will arrive "on next-generation consoles including," suggests that a PlayStation 3 version may eventually arrive as well.

"EA has done a tremendous job of re-imagining the world's most popular board game while also creating new digital twists that can only be achieved in an interactive world," said Hasbro digital media manager Mark Blecher. "Rolling the dice and passing Go will never be the same."

EA Amends, Extends Take-Two Buyout Offer

Mar 28, 2008 12:33pm CST tags: Take-Two Interactive Software, Electronic Arts, Buyout
Following publisher Take-Two Interactive Software's recommendation that its stockholders deny a hostile takeover attempt by rival publisher Electronic Arts, EA has submitted a slightly amended offer to the company's shareholders.

Take-Two Interactive is the owner of numerous popular properties, such as Grand Theft Auto, Max Payne, and BioShock, and development studios, including the various branches of Rockstar, 2K Boston, 2K Marin, 2K Czech, and 2K Australia.

While the basic premise remains the same--a payout of $26.00 per share--Electronic Arts extended the deadline by a week to reflect Take-Two's week-long delay of its annual stockholder meeting, which is now scheduled for April 17. The offer now expires on April 18, 2008.

According to EA, the offer of $26.00 per share represents a 64% premium over Take-Two's closing stock price on February 15, which was the last trading day before EA sent its revised proposal to Take-Two. As of this writing, Take-Two's stock is valued at $25.55 per share.

The other major shift in EA's offer concerns Take-Two's so-called "poison pill" plan, which adopted on March 24 to prevent a hostile takeover at what... Read more

Take-Two Suggests Shareholders Reject EA Bid; Expresses Interest in Possible Business Deals

Mar 26, 2008 11:13am CST tags: Take-Two Interactive Software, Electronic Arts, Buyout
Responding to Electronic Arts' attempt at a hostile takeover, Take-Two Interactive's board of directors has advised its stockholders to reject EA's buyout offer of $26 per share.

In a statement released today, Take-Two--which owns such beloved properties as Grand Theft Auto, Max Payne, and BioShock--labeled the offer as "inadequate in multiple respects and contrary to the best interests of Take-Two’s stockholders."

Though this marks the second time that Take-Two has officially spurned EA's unsolicited attempts to acquire the publisher, the company revealed that it is interested in business agreements with EA and other parties.

While now open to discussing possible business combinations, Take-Two affirmed its intent to remain independent and stated that it will not enter into negotiations until after the release of Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, X360) on April 29.

Labeling Grand Theft Auto as "one of the most valuable and durable franchises in the interactive entertainment software industry," Take Two noted its belief that "the full commercial potential of [Grand Theft Auto IV] will not be evident until after its release."

The Wii version will come with a total of 63 songs, five of which are bonus songs. A full list of the 63 tracks was not provided, though the initial 58 are expected to mirror the 45 main songs and 13 bonus tracks of the previously-released PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 editions.

Gibson Sues EA, MTV, Harmonix over Rock Band; Update: Harmonix Responds, Denies Allegations

Mar 21, 2008 5:20pm CST tags: Rock Band, Guitar Hero, Harmonix, MTV Games, Electronic Arts, Gibson, Lawsuit
Update: Rock Band developer Harmonix has issued a response to the lawsuit, labeling guitar maker Gibson's claims of patent infringement "completely without merit."

"It is unfortunate that Gibson unfairly desires to share in the tremendous success enjoyed by the developers of Rock Band and Guitar Hero," a Harmonix spokesperson told Shacknews. "This lawsuit is completely without merit and we intend to defend it vigorously.

"Gibson's patent, filed nearly 10 years ago, required a 3D display, a real musical instrument and a recording of a concert," Harmonix's statement continued. "Rock Band and Guitar Hero are completely different: among other things they are games, require no headset and use a controller only shaped like a real instrument."

Original Story: Continuing its recent legal activity, guitar manufacturer Gibson has sued Rock Band developer Harmonix, along with owner MTV Networks and publisher Electronic Arts, for infringing on one of its patents.

According to Gibson, Harmonix--which developed the multi-instrument music title Rock Band (PS2, PS3, X360) and created the Guitar Hero series--violated a 1999 patent for technology that simulates a concert performance via pre-recorded audio and a musical instrument.

The guitar maker sued six retailers--GameStop, Amazon.com, Wal-Mart... Read more
