Aliens: Colonial Marines Release Date Dependent on Aliens vs. Predator Sales, Says Sega

Aug 24, 2009 5:02pm CST tags: Aliens vs. Predator, Aliens: Colonial Marines
Sega now says that Gearbox's delayed Aliens shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines may ship earlier or later depending on the success of Rebellion's Aliens vs. Predator.

"What I would say is it's unlikely that we'd launch anything within six months [after Aliens vs. Predator], but probably nine months, eight to 12 months possibly," said Sega president Mike Hayes to G4TV. "Though we literally are looking at that at the moment and a lot of is going to depend, as well, on how successful AvP is at the box [retail]."

Rebellion's Aliens vs. Predator.
Aliens vs. Predator is scheduled for a first quarter 2010 release, meaning that Colonial Marines might be pushed into 2011 if demand for Rebellion's game is less than expected.

"It's what level of 'well' does it do," added Hayes, "do we then determine when we want to bring the next one out and then, of course, determine what the third one in the series is likely to be."

The loving embrace of an alien. The longing stare of a predator. Much like Heavy Rain, Aliens vs. Predator is all about finding love. I think you find it with the help of an M41-A pulse rifle.

Aliens vs. Predator is set for a February 2010 launch on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Aliens vs. Predator Impressions and Interview: Bringing It All Back Home

Jun 09, 2009 8:00pm CST tags: Aliens vs. Predator, E3 2009
Being a big fan of Rebellion's original Aliens vs. Predator FPS, the studio's new sequel--a faithful three-campaign amalgamation of the original experience--is extremely exciting to me. And while I didn't go hands-on with it at E3, I did get a behind-closed-doors look at the Marine campaign. And the Marine campaign, as any fan knows, is the best part of any AVP title.

What I saw was encouraging. In terms of raw graphical prowess, the new Alien vs. Predator is a pure species of Alien game. Smoke, light and shadow dominated the palette in an overrun civilian compound, the setting of the demonstration. Gaping, acid-encrusted holes in the steel walkways, turret targeting lasers faintly cutting through the haze--it all would have been intensely scary, had the introductory level not been populated with scores of NPCs.

But beyond the game's impressive graphical touches--those screenshots aren't doctored--Rebellion is putting some work into making the iconic enemies just as terrifying to fight as they were in the original.

In the new AVP, Giger's nightmares understand what shadow is, and will intelligently use it to their advantage. During one assault, three aliens rapidly closed in on the Marine and his NPC buddies. After taking down two of the beasts, the third quietly disappeared near the end of the battle. Sensing a trap, the Marine slowly... Read more

Sega Announces New Aliens vs. Predator Game, Delays Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines

Feb 11, 2009 10:59am CST tags: Aliens: Colonial Marines, Aliens vs. Predator, Rebellion, Sega, Delay
A new Aliens vs. Predator game will arrive in early 2010, publisher Sega has announced, with the company noting that AvP will hit before its other two Aliens games.

That means Gearbox's shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines (PC, PS3, 360) and Obsidian's Aliens RPG won't debut until 2010, at the very earliest. Colonial Marines was originally expected last year, and was recently listed as a Q1 2009 release by Sega Europe.

Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines

Rumors that Aliens: Colonial Marines was put on hold emerged amidst layoffs, but Gearbox president Randy Pitchford quickly clarified that it wasn't cancelled. Meanwhile, Sega has remained rather quiet about the Aliens RPG since it was revealed in 2006.

The new Aliens vs. Predator title will be developed by Rebellion, which handled the 1999 PC shooter Aliens versus Predator, but had no involvement in Monolith's 2001 sequel.

No further details or platforms for Aliens vs. Predator were provided, apart from a promise it will be "innovative," with Sega vowing that more details are due "very soon."
