Quake Live Open Beta Goes Live

66
After an extensive closed beta period, id's free-to-play version of Quake III, Quake Live, has now entered open beta testing.

The web-based title boasts 40 arenas and 5 game modes, in addition to copious amounts of late 90s nostalgia.

it installs a plugin for whichever browser you're using. Then while you're setting things up it d/l's the content.

The plug-in is around 2 MB. The game files took me a couple minutes to download, so I'd say maybe like 50 MB?

That's a lot bigger than I thought. Seemed to download pretty quick for me, though.

Wow 260 meg! I thought this was designed to be played in a browser? That's half the size for the original Q3 release. I thought you'd have to get a few plug ins and you are in, kind of like this Q3 Flash game that has been out for awhile:

You don't need all that at once though. Like they've said it streams the stuff to you as you play. If you still haven't downloaded the particular map you need it'll download it right away, though.
