Rock Band PS3 Patch Adds Guitar Hero III Controller Support

9
An update to the PlayStation 3 version of Harmonix's Rock Band (PS2, PS3, X360) will arrive later today, granting compatibility with the wireless Les Paul controller bundled in the PS3 version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PC, PS2, PS3, Wii, X360).

Harmonix's own Sean Baptiste announced the update on the Rock Band forums, describing the patch as "a routine update for the PLAYSTATION 3 version of Rock Band that addresses a number of items related to guitar controller compatibility." Although Baptiste rightfully uses cautious wording in the post, Shacknews has confirmed with sources inside EA that the patch will indeed give support for the Gibson Les Paul PS3 wireless controller.

Unlike the PS3's Guitar Hero III controller, the Xbox 360 Gibson Les Paul controller bundled with Guitar Hero III has worked without issue with the 360 version of Rock Band from day one. With this specifically engineered update from Harmonix, it will be interesting to see if Activsion holds up the consumer-punishing claim written prominently in its instruction manual: "Activision expressly prohibits the use of this Guitar Hero controller with any other game."

That is nice. I guess I'll have to buy GH3 since EA doesn't seem to be interested in sending me my replacement guitar.

It's odd the disparity between people's experiences getting their rock band instruments replaced. Some people seem to be forgotten entirely, and some people are getting crazy fast service (myself included).

Did you put in your RMA over the phone, or on the web? Did you go the express route or the regular?

I did over the web, regular, on 11/21. Still nothing.

It drove me to crack open my Strat and fix it myself, but I would still like to get one of the new replacement guitars for the sake of longevity.

          Oops, meant express, not regular.

call and complain - apparently you'll get a free game out of it

Web and express. I put in my request on the night of the 20th.

I put in my request on the web yesterday (Tuesday), and *immediately* got a UPS tracking number for the replacement. Checked the tracking number this morning, and it is scheduled for delivery on Friday. So... pretty good turnaround from my vantage point.

Even better, I just checked it again and it's *ahead* of schedule for a delivery of tomorrow (Thursday). That means I'll have mine in about 48 hours from filing the request. I guess they've gotten their act majorly together since the first batch of people asked for replacements.

Man, I haven't played my guitar at all but I'm tempted to do this just to get a newer one.
