Electronic Arts today revealed it is publishing a new fighting game franchise based on the world of Marvel superheroes.

No details were announced, but we do know who will be working on the game--the fight club of developers at EA Chicago, responsible for the recent Def Jam: Icon (PS3, X360) and Fight Night Round 3 (PS2, PS3, Xbox, X360, PSP). The team is aiming to release in 2008 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

"We looked at past comic-based games to find out what was missing and what was needed to successfully translate the intensity, excitement and fiction from comics into fighting games," said EA Chicago VP Kudo Tsunoda. "WeÂ’re challenging ourselves to make a game that delivers on the Super Hero promises of past top-tier fighting games."

Not the first Marvel fighting game EA has brought to stores, Nihilistic and EA Canada's Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects (PS2, Xbox, GCN, NDS, PSP) was released in 2005, to poor reviews. Marvel Nemesis 2 was slated for a Q4 2007 release, but now appears to have been scrapped in favor of the new franchise.

I really wish that capcom still had control of the marvel license for fighting games, EA SUCKS at fighitng games. Def Jam is awful now, they should have stuck with the AKI engine, and all their past marvel fighting games have sucked hard. The capcom stuff is classic, and i think the 2d nature simply fits them better...

yes i wish they would go back to 2d with games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. Thats when they were fun. They could make some nice crisp high def graphics....would be so awesome. Thats why I'm sooo looking forward to Street Fighter in HD that comes out sometime.

Totally, i can't tell you how excited I am for the HD remix. I would LOVE HD 2d fighting bring back 2d fighters into popularity. I think that the online support just needs to be better than it has been to bring back the arcade feel of competition. If they could start making online tournaments, bracket style, and reward people with rank, i think that would help greatly.

The last Marvel game was actually developed by Nihilistic, the guys Blizzard took Starcraft: Ghost away from. I don't care for DefJam, but EA Chicago has proven themselves with Fight Night. I'll be hopeful for now.

I love fight night, probably, until SC4 comes out, my favorite current 3d fighting series. Beyond that, EA has had a rough go of it with fighting. But you are right, there is at least some hope for a fighting game, i just hope the current def jam is no indication.

The entire hip hop angle is why I don't even give Def Jam a chance. I've never been huge on fighters, so that fact that Icon was a (from what I heard) a greatly simplified fighter actually made it sound interesting to me. But I don't give two shits about hip hop and that's half the game.

I liked the first 2 def jams becuase all they were were prettier versions of the old N64 WCW vs NWO and WWF No Mercy games by AKI. Those wrestling games (and the 2 Def Jam games) has such a great engine for relatively deep MP fighting/wrestling with a pretty simple control layout. Since both THQ and EA have decided not to use that great engine or something similar in games since, I dont play either series anymore (no big loss since i don't really listen to rap much and i havent watched wrestling in years)

Have they not used the engine, or at least control layout, for anything since? I didn't know it'd been used in that many games.

Icon blew since it was like fighting in syrup, just not fun at all. Fight for NY was fantastic though, no joke, I loved that game and even finished it.
