Electronic Arts today revealed it is publishing a new fighting game franchise based on the world of Marvel superheroes.

No details were announced, but we do know who will be working on the game--the fight club of developers at EA Chicago, responsible for the recent Def Jam: Icon (PS3, X360) and Fight Night Round 3 (PS2, PS3, Xbox, X360, PSP). The team is aiming to release in 2008 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

"We looked at past comic-based games to find out what was missing and what was needed to successfully translate the intensity, excitement and fiction from comics into fighting games," said EA Chicago VP Kudo Tsunoda. "We’re challenging ourselves to make a game that delivers on the Super Hero promises of past top-tier fighting games."

Not the first Marvel fighting game EA has brought to stores, Nihilistic and EA Canada's Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects (PS2, Xbox, GCN, NDS, PSP) was released in 2005, to poor reviews. Marvel Nemesis 2 was slated for a Q4 2007 release, but now appears to have been scrapped in favor of the new franchise.
