New Red Faction On The Way

17

According to this story on IGN, we'll be seeing a third Red Faction game. Commenting on THQ plans for game sequels CEO Brian Farrell had this to say to investors "Saints Row, Stuntman, which will be released this year, Juiced, which is a sequel to the product we launched a couple years ago, Destroy All Humans, MX, and my favorite, Red Faction."

Hopefully it doesn't turn out like RF2.

      repeat after me:

      there is no RF2
      there is no RF2
      there is no RF2

now seriously, I didn't even bother with the 2nd, but the first was really nice - a tad short, and Geomod was often little but a gimmick. But damn, a contemporary physics engine and graphics + GeoMod? I really, REALLY hope they don't screw this up

Red Faction had all the FPS cliches of the time: stealth missions, escort missions, drivable vehicle rail-shooter segments, etc. The color palette of the game was so bland that it looked like you were running with 256 color textures. The polycount was just a little bit better than in Quake 2 or Half-Life. It had "My first A-grade FPS" written all over it; the only new thing they delivered was GeoMod, and the use of it was only encouraged in the early mine segments and one or two puzzles.

Unless they plan to make something worthwhile, they're just cashing in on a battered and tired franchise name, a vague similarity to the Descent series (which IIRC they can't do because that's Interplay's trademark), and THQ's adverspamming techniques.

I liked RF2. It was fun. Then again, I never played the first one.

I thought RF2 was ok. But it had nothing to do with the first Red Faction.

Regardless, neither game lived up to the hype of GeoMod. Hopefully this one will actually use the tech to a much much fuller extent.
