Dragon Age: Inquisition - Mage Specialization Quests Guide

Our complete walkthrough for completing all the Mage Specialization quests.

Every class in Dragon Age Inquisition features a specialization, a skill tree which allows you to focus on certain skills which are only available in that skill tree. Today I’ll focus on the Mage class, and what you need to do to obtain the skill tree for each specialization.

Once you reach the point of the story where you can choose a specialization you’ll need to choose which skill tree you want to work towards unlocking. First you’ll need to complete the Specialists for the Inquisitor quest from the War Table in Skyhold. Once that is complete three Trainer NPCs will arrive at Skyhold and you’ll need to choose which path you want to take.

Choose wisely because once you complete the quest and commit to a specialization you won’t be able to change it out.

TIP: Complete all three Trainer Quests for maximum XP.

Once you talk to all three NPCs and receive their quests it’s time to move on and get some stuff taken care of. Be warned though, some of the enemies you’ll need to fight to complete these quests are tough –- Level 12 and up – so you’ll want to make sure you are at least level 11, and have a pretty good party ready to go.

Way of the Knight-Enchanter

For this quest you’ll start off with three objectives. They aren’t terribly hard objectives, and shouldn’t take you very long to take care of.

  • Collect 3 Wisp Essences
  • Collect 10 Lazurite
  • Acquire Writing on Knight-Enchanter Methods

First let’s tackle the easiest part of this quest. If you’ve acquired Vivienne you can easily pick this objective up by visiting her in Skyhold and finding the book on the table next to the large window she’s standing in front of.

Now it’s on to the Wisp Essences. This part is going to be a little tough because of the higher level enemies you’ll need to take down in order to get the essences. Once in the Fallow Mire you’ll need to head to the three locations marked on the map below, and take out the Pure Wisps –- there should be one per marked area –- and pick up the loot they drop.

Once you have the Wisps in place it’s time to head out to The Western Approach to gather up Lazurite. You can find this ingredient in other places, but this is going to be the easiest and most rewarding way to find it. Make sure to bring a Mage along for the run, because you’re going to need to “Energize” some boards into place to reach the farming location.

Once you arrive at the Western approach head forward until you come to the Sandrock Mine. You can go right if you want, but the left cave is where you’re going to find the most Lazurite. As I mentioned earlier you’re going to need a Mage who can use the “Energize” option to move around some boards and gain access. If you don’t obtain all 10 Lazurite on your trip through the mine simply reload the area and run through it again.

Now that you have all the ingredients you need to head back to Skyhold and into the Undercroft. Head over to the Weapon crafting table and interact with it. Now scroll down the list until you find the Spirit Blade Hilt schematic and craft it. With that complete head back and talk with the Trainer, Commander Helaine to complete the quest. From here you can choose to immediately commit to the Knight-Enchanter specialization, or you can back out and complete the other quests for extra experience.

Way of the Necromancer

Now that we’ve covered the Knight-Enchanter it’s time to take a look at the darker side of the Mage spectrum. The Necromancer is a mage specialization which focuses on using the power of the dead, and is the specialization that Dorian follows, so if you want to see what skills you’ll be able to unlock just take a look at his, unless of course you didn’t recruit him in which case… well shame on you.

To complete the Way of the Necromancer you’ll need to complete three objectives.

  • Collect 3 Nevarran Skulls
  • Collect 10 Bloodstones
  • Acquire Writing on Necromancer Methods

As before we’ll tackle the easy part first. If you recruited Dorian then head to the library and locate him. Now use your Search skill to locate the needed book and pick it up. If you didn’t recruit him then you’ll need to head to Val Royeaux and buy it from the book merchant there.

Now it’s on to collecting Nevarran Skulls, which you’ll pick up off of undead located in the Storm Coast. Don’t worry though, we’ve taken the time to put together a couple of key locations for grabbing these pesky drops. Just head to the marked areas on the map below to easily complete this quest without wandering along the coastline for too long.

Once you have the book and the Nevarran Skulls it’s time to gather up some Bloodstones. For this part of the quest you’ll want to head to the Exalted Plains and head up to Riverwatch Camp. From there follow the road Northeast along the Path of Flame until you come to the area marked on the map below. We easily found enough Bloodstone in this small area to fill our pockets with everything we needed.

With everything collected head to the nearest Requisition Table to Craft a Jeweled Skull. With the skull crafted head back to Skyhold and talk with Viuus Anaxas to finish up this side quest, and accept the Necromancer Specialization if you so choose.

Way of the Rift-Mage

The final Mage specialization focuses on using status-inflicting spells, as well as several other powerful spells. This specialization is followed by Solas, so you can simply view his skills to see what you’ll have available if you choose to take this route.

For this side quest you’ll need to

  • Collect 3 Venatori Tomes
  • Collect 10 Ring Velvet
  • Acquire Book on Rift Magic Methods

First let’s grab the book, which you can pick up by visiting Solas’s room at Skyhold. You can also purchase it from the book merchant in Val Royeaux if you want to, but why would you waste the gold?

With the book in hand it’s time to head out to the Exalted Plains for the other materials. First let’s focus on the Venatori Tomes which you can acquire by killing the enemies at the locations marked on the map below.

Once you have all 3 tomes it’s time to gather your Ring Velvet, which can be done simply by following the Path of Flame and killing any humanoid enemies you come across. Almost all of them should drop some Ring Velvet, so you shouldn’t have many issues at all.

Once you’ve got all the materials head to the nearest Requisitions Table and craft the Tome of Rifts before heading back to Skyhold and turning in the quest to You Trainer, yes that’s really her name, and then accept that specialization if you so choose.

If you haven’t selected a specialization because you wanted to complete all the quests, that’s cool, great even. To choose your specialization simply talk to the trainer you received that particular “Way Of…” quest from and make your choice.
