Online games live and die. EVE Online has managed to survive ten years, but one day, it may succumb to the fate the befalls even the greatest games. When that day comes, will your time spent in CCP's universe be remembered?
Earlier, CCP announced plans to erect a monument to current EVE players to "celebrate the first decade of the EVE Universe." According to CCP, "the monument will serve as a physical manifestation of the respect and appreciation the company has for the millions of EVE Online players and followers hwo have contributed in the cooperative creation of the EVE Universe over the past decade. It also serves as a gift to Reykjavik, the home of CCP Games and EVE Online."
The monument designed by Sigurður Guðmundsson will stand atop a half meter tall metal-plated concrete platform. The platform will have the names of all the main characters of all active EVE Online players, including players who have passed away, as captured on March 1st. In addition, a laptop will be buried under the monument that includes videos and messages from players and development staff.
CEO Hilmar Veigar Petursson said in the announcement: "Our intention is to immortalize the contributions of the millions of people of the EVE universe in a way that extends beyond their immortality in our games."
The monument will be unveiled on April 30th, just in time for the company's annual Fanfest.
