Weekend Confirmed 153 - PlayStation 4 announcements, Year Walk, Crysis 3
by Jeff Mattas, Feb 22, 2013 11:00am PSTThe PlayStation 4 has been announced, so it shouldn't be a surprise that this week's episode of Weekend Confirmed is all about the new system, services, and software. Though Jeff Cannata is away in Barcelona, Garnett Lee and "Indie" Jeff Mattas are joined by Christian Spicer and Mike Schramm to break down what's exciting, what's concerning, and that which is still unknown about Sony's next-gen console announcements. Though PlayStation 4 is this week's focus, the crew also manages to sneak in some impressions of Crysis 3, and praise for Simogo's moody iOS adventure, Year Walk. Of course, a fresh batch of Finishing Moves brings it all home.

"I quit. Seriously The you didn’t love the PS4 presentation so therefore you’re an asshole crowd make me hate that I wasted my time on a show"
"For the record, not that anyone will get it right, I think the PS4 looks awesome."
"And that a box that rad warranted a far more aspirational presentation. So shoot me for wanting more and not just cheerleading."
First of all, people saying that Garnett is an asshole for his opinion are jerks.
But second, I think that Garnett's outrage at people thinking that he had a negative impression of the PS4 is more than a little bit unfair. Yes, he had a few nice things to say about the hardware. He said that Cerny's involvement had him "optimistic" and that it was "juicy." After that, I would say that the show was dominated by some pretty harsh criticism.
This goes back to what I was saying about Jeff's Fire Emblem comments from the previous show. When you spend 90% of your time talking about things that are bad about something, people are going to get the impression that your overall impression was negative unless you make a serious effort to emphasize the contrary.
I listened to the show again just to make sure that my memory of it wasn't colored, but no - it was very negative. Basically, things that might have been positive either got glossed over and set aside or turned into speculation about how it probably wouldn't be executed well, and things that were negative were dwelt on and joked about at length.
For example, I get the impression that Garnett thought that the Infamous trailer was really good. But it wasn't discussed at all except to say that it was a mistake not to show it first.
So to Garnett: I like the show and I think that you are probably the best show host in the world of video game coverage. But the PS4 episode was overwhelmingly negative and you can't blame people for coming away with the impression that you had a negative impression of it. People react to the amount of time you spend saying negative vs. positive things.

Right, but the point of the presentation was the unpack what the PS4 was, not to say "look, we have a new AAA title that will redefine gaming!" The point of a console unveiling has never been to introduce a killer app. The Gaikai features Sony unveiled are the foundation for what will make PS4 a must have platform.
Speaking of which you said "nothing they showed from a software standpoint took advantage of any of those things," but they demonstrated the video uploading feature with every game demo in the show. They demonstrated the Gaikai remote play with Knack (which you didn't even aknowledge for like the first hour of the conversation). And Yoshida has confirmed that that will be working day 1. To compound the disillusionment, Christian then went on to say "That's because none of those features are ready yet!" Your conversation didn't reflect what actually happened at the conference.
So I mean what this suggests to me is that you didn't appreciate what Sony was doing which was putting a laser focus on content that we actually care about as gamers. If it was any other press conference there would have been some demonstration with like Justin Bieber sitting in some fake sitcom living room going "Hai yo, I'm pwning some newbs, and pressin the share button!" But Sony avoided all that superficial shit. Over and over again it seemed like Mike Schramm was trying to inject sanity into the discussion and you would relentlessly blow past his points.
On one hand your primary complaint was that they didn't demonstrate these services. In the first 40 minutes Sony revealed Marc Cerny, showed us the controller, dropped the 8GB DDR5 bomb, demonstrated remote play, and video uploading; and you brushed off all this information as "some stories you don't care about." They also unveiled the first ever PS4 game in that time span, Knack, and you didn't even acknowledge that title existed for most of the episode. Why didn't just stop at some point and say "hey we should probably just establish the four first party titles Sony actually unveiled to us" instead of letting Christian go off on some inane rant about the fleeting nature of corporate promises. Like wtf was that even? This was the biggest news event to happen for gaming in years, and instead of hearing about that, I got to hear about Christian's emotional trauma regarding UMD transfers on the PSP.
So the thing, when you're not correct on what you're saying, and you're not even covering everything that was shown, and then you conclude the show with this rant that sounds like it came from a frat boy, its going to disillusion your audience who are the most passionate of passionate about video games. I will say clearly the weakest points of the conference in terms of providing revelations where Blizzard, Bungie, and Square Enix. But contrary to Jeff's take, they were placed at the end of the show because they were the least important to the show. Anyone in news knows you put your most important information in the beginning. Secondly, the whole theme of the show was making Playstation a developer oriented brand, and Blizzard and Bungie of course have symbolic meaning in that context coming from foreign platforms.
