Weekend Confirmed 153 - PlayStation 4 announcements, Year Walk, Crysis 3
by Jeff Mattas, Feb 22, 2013 11:00am PSTThe PlayStation 4 has been announced, so it shouldn't be a surprise that this week's episode of Weekend Confirmed is all about the new system, services, and software. Though Jeff Cannata is away in Barcelona, Garnett Lee and "Indie" Jeff Mattas are joined by Christian Spicer and Mike Schramm to break down what's exciting, what's concerning, and that which is still unknown about Sony's next-gen console announcements. Though PlayStation 4 is this week's focus, the crew also manages to sneak in some impressions of Crysis 3, and praise for Simogo's moody iOS adventure, Year Walk. Of course, a fresh batch of Finishing Moves brings it all home.

Coolest aspect and the one sure to be more hype than reality is streaming games. Amazing that SONY will allow it, but just like 4K, it's a bandwidth problem. Even on my FIOS connection streaming GBs of games is not yet a reality. Maybe if I splurged for the $100 a month broadband package, or if Google Fiber somehow gets traction (it almost certainly will not in the next three years) it would be, but I doubt it.
The whole idea of "not owning" stuff because it's all cloud based is such an old man's thought process. Welcome to the future of ALL mediums. Downloads are the future, iTunes is huge, Spotify which can be argued grants you even LESS ownership of content is huge. My generation (I'm 21) and the one coming behind me aren't interested in storing discs all over the place, give me a file and let me archive it somewhere where I don't have to worry about it.
Overall I'm extraordinarily excited for next generation. A lot of people have been overtly cynical of this press event. "Where's the box?!" "What's the price point?" "The controller is stupid?" "Oh the graphics don't look that much better than current gen!" It's February. It's early. I'm more optimistic than usual because it appears SONY is really listening to developers. This is a beautiful shift for the company and I'm hopeful that it will lead to better experiences for all.

Then what? Games just aspire to that all over again? What's the point?
Cutting edge games are only going to look cutting edge in the moment, it's art direction that stands the test of time. That's the reason why the original Toy Story still looks good despite it's CG being primitive and dated, whereas Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within looks like a pile of crap crawling around in the uncanny valley.
At some point, the pursuit of graphics becomes more ideology than practical pursuit, especially when there are so many other options we could pursue in order to make games look better that don't involve just bumping up resolutions and poly counts.
By the numbers, graphics can always become more advanced, but at some point they stop being "better" and are mostly just higher numbers for people who obsess with numbers to compare and brag about.
