Velocity Ultra coming to Vita with HD graphics, teleportation

One of the better-known games from the PS Minis program was Velocity from developer FuturLab. The shmup was delivered for free to PlayStation Plus subscribers, and offered a unique twist on the genre: the ability to teleport.

"If I was talking to somebody from my generation," programmer Robin Jubber described of the original game, "I'd perhaps describe it as a 16-bit game from the glory days of the Amiga, but with an unlimited palette, better resolution, faster performance and much better music quality!" So, what do you call an updated version of a 16-bit version of an Amiga game? Velocity Ultra, of course.

Velocity Ultra is a PS Vita-native version of the game, taking full advantage of Vita's capabilities. That means you'll get new features unavailable in Minis, including Trophies, online high scores, and updated graphics.

"You can think of Velocity Ultra as the director's cut," FuturLab managing director James Marsden told the PlayStation.Blog. "Everything we would have done the first time around if we'd had the budget. Our goal now is to create a perfectly formed piece of interactive art that will do your shiny PS Vita justice!"

Marsden "guestimates" a May release for the game, and hopes that its release will establish Velocity as a "franchise for a wider audience," which will hopefully lead to more games in the series.
